Despite the pelting rain, Victor left his new quarters at the American garrison and walked to the waiting jeep. He’d asked a driver to bring him to the French sector, where he had a meeting with the head of engineering, Captain Pierre Lejeune. Tegel, the chosen location for the new airport, was a former military training area that had been flattened during the war. “Sorry. I’m not late, am I?” he asked the driver. “No, sir.
