November 5, 1948The big day had arrived and despite the fact that, apart from the runway, nothing else was fully functional at the new Tegel airport, the first aircraft was scheduled to land at exactly noon.
Victor, Pierre, James and the entire crew of French and American soldiers involved in the construction work lined the runway on the side next to the unfinished airport building and the control tower. On the other side of the runway stood thousands of curious German workers who didn’t want to miss this significant moment in history. Everyone’s faces gleamed with hopeful anxiety.
