chapter 9: The Truth in Shadows

1726 Words
The Truth in Shadows Emma’s body trembled. The room still felt wrong—charged with something ancient, something dangerous. The air was heavy, as if the intruder’s presence still lingered. She turned to Adrian, her voice shaking. “Who was that?” He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he released her wrist and ran a hand through his hair, exhaling sharply. For the first time since she met him, Adrian looked… unsettled. His usual arrogance, his cool control—it was slipping. Emma swallowed hard. “Adrian.” His jaw clenched. Then, after a long silence, he finally said, “That was Lucian.” Emma frowned. The name sent a chill through her. Adrian’s eyes darkened. “He is a demon. Like me.” She stiffened. Like him. But… Adrian didn’t seem like that thing. Did he? Adrian stepped toward her, slow, cautious. “Lucian was once…” He paused. “My brother.” Emma’s stomach dropped. “Brother?” Adrian let out a low, humorless chuckle. “Not by blood. But in the way demons are made. We were forged in the same darkness.” Emma shook her head. “That doesn’t make sense. Why did he call me—” She hesitated. The word felt like poison in her mouth. Bride. Adrian’s gaze flickered. “Because in his world, you are.” Emma’s breath caught. “I don’t belong to anyone.” His lips pressed into a thin line. “No. You don’t.” His voice was fierce. Unwavering. “And I won’t let them take you.” Something in his words sent warmth through her chest—a dangerous warmth. But before she could press further, Adrian’s expression turned cold again. He grabbed her wrist again—not rough, but firm. Determined. “We need to go.” Emma stiffened. “Go where?” His grip tightened. “Somewhere safe.” Her heart pounded. He was avoiding something—she could feel it. And as he pulled her toward the door, she knew one thing for certain. She wasn’t just a human caught in something beyond her control. She was part of it. And she was going to find out why. ---– A Visit Home. Emma dug her heels into the floor, forcing Adrian to stop. “No.” Her voice was firm. “I’m going home.” Adrian turned slowly, his eyes flashing. “It’s not safe.” “I don’t care.” She met his gaze, refusing to back down. “My mom and my brother— they need to see me. I need to see them.” Adrian’s jaw clenched. “Emma—” “I can’t just disappear.” Her voice cracked slightly. “They’ll worry. I have to go.” Silence. Adrian exhaled sharply, rubbing his temple. “You don’t understand—” “No. You don’t understand,” she cut in. “I’m going.”****“With or without you.” Something dark flickered in his eyes, but then, after a long pause, he sighed. “Fine.” His voice was sharp, reluctant. “But I’m coming with you.” --- Later – Emma’s Family Home. The moment Emma stepped through the front door, a wave of warmth and familiarity hit her. The scent of home-cooked food filled the air, mixed with a hint of lavender—her mother’s favorite candle. “Mom?” Her voice trembled slightly. Footsteps. Then—her mother appeared from the kitchen. Emma barely had time to react before she was wrapped in a tight hug. “Emma!” Her mother’s voice was thick with relief. “Where have you been?” Emma’s throat tightened. How could she explain everything? The demons. Adrian. The terrifying truth unraveling around her. Instead, she just said, “I— I’ve been busy.” Her mother pulled back, eyes filled with worry. “Busy? You just vanished!” Before Emma could reply, a smaller figure rushed into the room. “Emma!” Her little brother, Liam, threw his arms around her. She laughed softly, ruffling his hair. “Hey, buddy.” Adrian stood near the door, watching silently. Her mother’s eyes flicked to him—suspicious, curious. “And… who is this?” Emma hesitated. Adrian, as usual, was unreadable. But there was something guarded in his expression. She cleared her throat. “This is Adrian. He’s… a friend.” Her mother’s lips pressed together, clearly unconvinced. “A friend?” Emma forced a smile. “Yeah.” Liam grinned. “He looks like a vampire.” Emma choked on a laugh. If only he knew. Adrian smirked slightly but said nothing. Then, her mother sighed. “Well, come in. Both of you.” As they stepped inside, Emma felt it. A strange tension in the air. Like something unseen was watching. Waiting. And deep down, she knew— This visit home wouldn’t be as simple as she hoped. ----- A Quiet Evening. Emma watched as her mother gave Adrian a long, knowing look. Then, suddenly—a smile. “Oh… so you’re the fiancé?” Emma’s heart stopped. Her mouth opened—**to correct, to protest—**but nothing came out. Adrian tilted his head slightly, clearly amused. “Fiancé?” Her mother beamed. “Emma told me about you! Though she never gave details.” Emma gaped. What?! Liam grinned. “I knew it! He’s got that mysterious prince look.” Emma felt her soul leave her body. Meanwhile, Adrian… just smirked. And then—to her horror—he played along. He slipped an arm around her waist, pulling her close. “Well, I was wondering when she’d tell you.” Emma choked. Her mother clapped her hands. “Oh, I knew it! You look perfect together.” Liam snickered. “You totally kept it a secret from us, Emma.” Emma wanted to disappear. Adrian? Loving every second. Her mother pulled them toward the dining table. “Come, come! I made stew.” Emma forced a stiff smile, whispering under her breath. “You are evil.” Adrian chuckled, low and soft. “You started it.” --- Dinner – A New Face Everything was… normal. Too normal. The table was set. The food smelled incredible. For once, there was no lurking danger, no shadows creeping at the edges. Just… dinner. Halfway through the meal, there was a knock on the door. Before Emma could react, her mother smiled. “Oh! That must be Bella.” Emma’s eyes widened. Bella? The door swung open, and in walked a tall, gorgeous woman with bright, mischievous eyes. “Emma!!” Bella rushed forward, pulling Emma into a tight hug. Emma blinked. “Bella?” Bella grinned. “Of course, it’s me! Who else would come running when I hear my best friend is back in town?” Emma felt warmth flood her chest. She and Bella had been friends since childhood—thick as thieves. She was the only person Emma had ever trusted with her deepest secrets. Bella pulled back, grinning at Adrian. “And you must be the mysterious fiancé.” Adrian raised a brow. “Mysterious?” Bella laughed. “Emma always keeps things vague. I’ve been dying to meet you.” Emma sighed, dropping her head into her hands. This was not how she imagined today going. Adrian, to her horror, looked like he was having fun. Bella turned back to Emma, eyes sparkling. “So… tell me everything.” Emma swallowed. Because this? This was the part she had been dreading. ---- Truth Between Friends. Emma took a deep breath. Bella leaned in, her usual playful smirk fading as she studied Emma’s face. “Em, what’s wrong?” Emma glanced at her mother and Liam. They were happily eating, chatting with Adrian. They had no idea. She turned back to Bella. “Not here. Let’s talk outside.” Bella nodded instantly. That was Bella—always ready, always trusting. --- Outside – Under the Night Sky. The cool night air brushed against Emma’s skin as she and Bella stepped onto the front porch. Bella folded her arms, eyes sharp. “Alright. Spill.” Emma hesitated. How did she even begin? She took another breath. “Bella… What if I told you demons are real?” Bella blinked. Then—she laughed. “Are we talking metaphorically? Because trust me, I’ve dated a few.” Emma didn’t laugh. She looked her best friend in the eye. Serious. Bella’s smile slowly faded. “Emma…” Emma swallowed. “I’m not joking.” Bella’s eyes searched hers. Then, to Emma’s surprise—she didn’t call her crazy. She just exhaled. “Okay. Start from the beginning.” And so, Emma did. She told Bella everything. About the strange attacks. The shadowy creatures. The man who tried to take her. About Adrian. About what he really was. By the time she finished, Bella had gone completely still. Finally, after a long silence, Bella whispered, “Holy shit.” Emma fidgeted. “You believe me?” Bella shot her a flat look. “Emma. We’ve been friends since forever. I know when you’re lying.” Emma felt relief flood her. Bella shook her head, pacing. “Okay. So let me get this straight. Your super-hot fake fiancé is actually a demon.” Emma sighed. “Yes.” “And you were attacked by another demon who called you his bride.” Emma winced. “Yes.” Bella threw her hands up. “And you thought you could just casually come home and have dinner like none of this happened?!” Emma groaned. “I didn’t have a choice! My mom already thought Adrian was my fiancé, and—” Bella burst out laughing. Emma glared. “This is not funny!” Bella wiped a tear from her eye. “No, no. It’s hilarious.” Then she paused. Something flickered in her expression. Serious. Calculating. “Emma.” She stepped closer. “You know what this means, right?” Emma frowned. “What?” Bella’s voice dropped. “If demons are real… what else is?” The words sent a shiver down Emma’s spine. She hadn’t thought that far. And judging by the way Bella was looking at her now, neither had she. But something told Emma—this was just the beginning.
