Chapter Six

875 Words
Annabella’s POV Blake took a step towards me, just that one step and his face was mere inches away from mine. Before I could say or do anything, the wolf next to me growled so deeply the ground beneath my feet shook. I felt my blood run cold as I looked over, expecting him to be looking at me. He wasn’t though, he was baring his teeth at Blake. An action that could result in banishment or even death as it threated a future leader of the pack. I don’t understand what he was doing, but it seemed like he was protecting me. “Anthony, you and Sam head home. I will make sure Annabella gets back to the packhouse safe.” Anthony bowed his head, but Sam’s wolf didn’t move, his eyes targeted at Blake. Blake’s eyes clouded over for just a few seconds. Then the two left, leaving me and my least favorite person together, alone. I turned my head back towards him, looking him in his eyes. As hard as it was to do so, it was also just as easy. I wouldn’t let myself backdown though. He was doing the same, holding my gaze. He didn’t really have any sort of expression; we were in a stare down. After what seemed like a lifetime, he looked around, breaking the eye contact. I was able to wipe my sweaty palms on the sides of my apron. He was still only inches away from me, I could feel the heat coming off him, warm and inviting. He sighed, “I am truly sorry to hear about Patty, and I am sorry that you are having to hold the burden of being her daughter. I couldn’t think of a better person to do that though.” He tucked the same piece of hair behind my ear again. I leaned into his touch instinctively, for the tiniest of seconds. I backed away from him when I realized though. “What do you want Blake? Why are you here?” Not too many people even realized the house was still here, most of the pack didn’t live this far out. It was the only house for about ten miles. He sat down on the porch and patted the spot next to him. I crossed my arms across my chest, not wanting to sit next to him. He rolled his eyes but stopped. “Its not on purpose, I didn’t even know it was still here to be honest. We had just went for a run and was checking the boarders when I came across the field. I heard that my parents are maintaining it for you until you turn eighteen. Is that right?” I figured he knew this as he has been in alpha training for the past year. “They have, I am eternally grateful for that and them. In two days, I plan on moving back here for a while.” He c****d his head to the side, his brown eyes darkening. “You turn eighteen in just two days?” I nodded my head yes. “There are only two of us turning eighteen this month. Benjamin and I, his birthday is tomorrow.” He sighed and leaned back onto his elbows, his head moving to where he was looking up at the sky. I decided to sit next to him, I don’t know why but I think he is upset. “I hadn’t been told yet” I nodded my head yes and shrugged my shoulders. I never really gave my first shift too much thought, never really acknowledged the fact that I am alone. “Does it hurt?” Blake’s POV “Does it hurt?” when I heard her ask, I looked at her. While her eyes didn’t show it, her scent did. She was afraid. Her usual sweet honey and lavender scent was tainted with it. “I wont lie, it does. It hurts like hell and for some reason it takes forever, but it’s worth it. And it never hurts like that again.” She looked in front of her, the field of grass blowing in the breeze. The sun was starting to set, it was honestly beautiful. Not as beautiful as her, but a close second. I kept my gaze on her, memorizing every detail of hers. Making sure I had something to remember after I rejected her. “You will NOT reject her. That’s all I am saying” my wolf growled at me before shutting me off from him. “I never really thought about it. I have always been excited to be able to meet my wolf, obviously meet my mate if I have one. I didn’t, however, think about the actual shifting part. The fact that I really don’t have anyone, that I would be alone for it. I have friends, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t have any sort of family. It’s sad, really if you think about it.” Her eyes never moving, but her I saw her shoulders fall, I could almost feel her sadness, her loneliness. I opened my mouth, but no words came out. I just put my arm around her and hugged her to me.
