Chapter 2

I got back in the car and took off the wedding dress. Just then, Luis chased after me. He stood outside the car and pounded on the window. "Mia, we've planned this wedding for so long. Are you really calling it off just like that?" I opened the window, exhaustion already heavy in my eyes. "Isn't calling off the wedding exactly what you've wanted this whole time? Why are you even here looking for me?" When Luis saw how pale I was and how my thin frame trembled slightly, the furrow between his brows softened unexpectedly. When he spoke again, there was a hint of heartache in his voice. "Mia, stop this, okay? Today is our wedding day. Did you forget how much we looked forward to planning every single part of this wedding together?" His words brought me back to those months before the wedding, when we'd carved out time from our busy schedules to design every little detail of the wedding with our own hands. This had been the only source of sweet surprise and anticipation in both of our packed lives. My heart involuntarily softened. Seeing that my stance had softened, Luis continued, "But you humiliated her in front of all those people. That wasn't right. "Look, come back with me, apologize to her, and we'll go through with the wedding." With that, he opened the car door and reached in to pull me out. It was as if a bomb went off in my head. All the hurts and grievances from the past came flooding back to me. I wrenched my hand out of his grip and slapped him hard across the face. "Luis, what right do you have to demand I apologize to her? Why on earth should I apologize to a woman who deliberately ruined my wedding?" With a look that plainly showed he'd run out of patience, Luis said, "I already told you, that's just how Ruby is. I only see her as a really close friend." I turned my head away, refusing to look at him, and spoke with biting sarcasm, "The kind of close friend you even have to ask for permission before sleeping with your own wife? "The kind of close friend you'd abandon me alone on the highway in the middle of the night just because she said the power went out and she was scared of the dark?" Only after the words left my mouth did I realize I still clearly remembered every single wrong, every little grievance from all these years. Before I knew it, tears were streaming down my face. I raised my hand to wipe my tears, then turned to Luis and said, "Luis, let's end this. I'm truly exhausted." Yet when I looked up, I saw Luis smiling softly as he chatted animatedly with someone on w******p, so absorbed that he didn't even lift his head. He didn't even notice when I started the car and drove off.
