Chapter 3

665 Words
When I got home, I looked around our apartment, every inch of it marked by the life we'd built together. The cozy little home I had once found so warm now only struck me as unbearably repulsive and an eyesore. After packing up all my essential documents, I called the legal department manager at my company. "Please expedite the separation and division of business interests and assets between me and Luis' company. Also, draft a lawsuit for me. I want to reclaim all the money and resources I have spent on Luis over the years." After I finished speaking, I hung up the phone. Exhausted beyond measure, I lay down on the sofa and fell asleep. When I woke up again, I felt a heavy weight pressing against my side. I saw Luis, eyes closed, his head nestled against my shoulder, sound asleep. That strong jasmine perfume kept drifting off him, filling my nose, and I felt overwhelmingly sick. Only Ruby loved jasmine perfume. No doubt, after I left last night, he spent the entire night carousing with his "good friend" again. Remembering what my lawyer had told me before I fell asleep, I fought down the nausea, took out his phone, and entered our anniversary as the passcode to unlock it. But the screen displayed an incorrect passcode message. I froze. He'd always insisted on using the date of our first meeting for every single password as a keepsake of us. But he'd changed it sometime when I wasn't looking. I entered his birthday, and again, I got an incorrect passcode prompt. I entered Ruby's birthday, and the phone unlocked. Right now, not a single emotion stirred in my chest. I turned on the phone, and a video they took yesterday was already playing automatically on the screen. After I left, Luis and his friends, gathered around Ruby, stayed behind at the wedding venue. "With Mia gone, even the air feels so much cleaner here," one of Luis' friends said. Ruby nudged them playfully, then smiled and said to Luis, "Mia is still angry. Women really are such a hassle. No wonder I never liked hanging out with girls growing up." After she finished speaking, she looked around the venue and said, "What a shame about this venue, which cost hundreds of thousands to decorate. This all came out of Luis' pocket. I feel so bad about it." As she spoke, she pulled off her evening gown, revealing a white wedding dress underneath. "How can Luis' wedding not have a bride? I'll have to fill in." Everyone else joined in with catcalls, and the two of them held an entire wedding ceremony right there in front of the group. After I saved a copy of the video and sent it to my lawyer, I packed my things and prepared to leave. I could not stand Luis any longer. Even breathing the same air as him made me feel overwhelmingly disgusted. When I walked out, I ran straight into Ruby, who was brazenly pushing open my front door and leading her group of friends into my house. All of them tacitly ignored me and walked straight into the living room. When Ruby saw Luis still sound asleep on the sofa, she curled up and snuggled into his arms. She slipped her hand onto his chest, grinning as she said, "My hands are freezing. Warm them up for me right away." Luis jolted awake. Flushing, he tried to pull her hand away. Ruby laughed and squeezed his chest hard, saying, "I've seen every inch of you, okay? Why are you getting shy?" I closed the door and locked all of that mess behind me. I got in my car to head to the office but accidentally scraped another car. When I got out to check, I found the other driver was actually Luis' older brother, Marcus Clark, heir to the Clark family. He looked at me with a warm, open smile. "Mia. Long time no see."
