Chapter 4

I zoned out staring at Marcus's tall, handsome side profile. Back in college, he was the top student and heartthrob of our entire school, incredibly popular with girls. But suddenly, he went abroad. It was around the same year that Luis and I officially announced our relationship. It left so many girls on campus heartbroken. I was lost in my own thoughts when I suddenly heard Marcus calling my name right next to my ear. I tilted my head up to look at him and asked blankly, "Are you here looking for Luis?" He suddenly broke into a soft smile and said gently, "I was asking how your low blood sugar has been all these years. Have you had any more fainting spells?" Hearing his question, I stared wide-eyed in shock. Suddenly, a thought popped into my head. I forced my frantically pounding heart to calm down and asked, "How do you know I fainted from low blood sugar before?" Marcus smiled and said, "You fainted from low blood sugar on the hill behind campus when we were undergrads. I was the one who took you to the hospital." His words hit me like a thunderclap. Turned out it was him who saved me that day! For a moment, so many conflicting emotions churned in my chest that I didn't know whether to cry or laugh. In my freshman year, to get some peace and quiet, I went alone to the hill behind campus to study. Out of nowhere, I suddenly fainted from low blood sugar. I only remember, through the fog, a pair of large, strong arms holding me and carrying me to the hospital. Though I never saw his face, the way my heart hammered the entire ride told me that was the feeling of falling for someone. When I woke up again, I was in a hospital bed. I went out to look for the person who'd saved me, and I ran straight into Luis the second I stepped out of the hospital room. I assumed it was him who saved me, and when I asked him to confirm it, he didn't deny it. From that moment on, I developed deep feelings for him, and I pursued him relentlessly through college. After we got together, for the sake of that one heart-pounding moment on the hill behind campus all those years ago, I poured every resource I had into helping his career take off. For his sake, I willingly tolerated all his flirty behavior with his so-called female friend. I never expected that the person who saved me, the person who made my heart flutter that day, was never him at all. All these years, I had loved the wrong person. He looked at me, and his gaze suddenly dimmed. He asked, "Mia, have you and Luis been doing well all these years?" Just thinking about Luis made my stomach turn. I replied, "We broke up yesterday. But we haven't split our shared property yet, and I'm just about to hire a lawyer to file a lawsuit." No sooner had I finished speaking than he said, "I worked as a law firm partner abroad for several years. I wonder if I could have the honor of handling this case for you?" I glanced at him in shock. I could see he was completely serious, not joking at all. I nodded in agreement. "Thank you so much! Marcus, you've done me a huge favor!" After saying this, I suddenly remembered I still had an important document I needed to grab from the house I shared with Luis. I brought Marcus back with me to get the document. The moment I opened the door, I saw Ruby wearing my pajamas, looking at me with the air of the lady of the house. She asked, "Mia, what are you doing back here? Come in and make yourself comfortable. Luis is still taking a shower." After she finished speaking, she never took her eyes off Marcus. "Who is this handsome guy? Is he the boy toy you're keeping on the side, Mia?" The words had barely left her mouth when Luis, who had heard the commotion, walked out wrapped in a bathrobe. When he saw Marcus standing there with me, his face went white with panic. "M-Marcus... what are you doing here?"
