I jerked awake for the fourth time that night. One glimpse out the window revealed that it was still pitch-black, and I groaned, waking Greg, who crawled into bed with me again—even though he knew he wasn’t supposed to be there. He let out a whine and licked my cheek. When I didn’t push him away or scold him, he took it as an invitation to slobber on my face.
After a few moments, and a thorough tongue-bath, I nudged him away. “All right, all right, that’s enough.”
He huffed, jumped to the floor, and threw me a look that was so pathetic—You wound me, Daddy—I couldn’t help snorting.
