The science of vampirism is quite simple. The first part is that our blood acts as a poison. Anyone who drinks our blood will die. However, the poison does not stop brain activity, but rather alters the way the body runs.
See, normally the body needs blood running throughout to power it. But the poison changes the body, making the blood irrelevant. The body continues to operate on electrical impulses alone. Blood doesn’t really run through the body so much as just sit there, not doing much.
That means the heart doesn’t need to beat to pump blood through the body. But the nutritional needs of the body change with the poison in a vampire’s blood. The poison overpowers the entire digestive system, leaving one need only—blood.
