CHAPTER FIVE

1646 Words
The transition from the sweltering heat of the private executive suite back to the sterile reality of the penthouse was jarring. They had returned in complete silence. In the back of the tinted Maybach, Xavier had sat with his legs crossed, his posture immaculate, staring out the window at the blurred city lights as if the desk in the study hadn't been left in complete disarray. He was wrapped tightly back up in his multi-billionaire armor, the perfect creases of his backup tuxedo neatly concealing the absolute monster he had been just an hour prior. Elena sat on the opposite leather seat, the faint, heavy ache between her thighs a constant, throbbing reminder that the boundaries of their marriage had been permanently rewritten. Now, standing in the middle of the dark, cavernous living room of the penthouse, the silence between them was deafening. The only sound was the soft, mechanical hum of the central air conditioning. Xavier unbuttoned his suit jacket, his movements slow and deliberate. He didn't look at her as he tossed the expensive wool garment onto the back of the white leather sofa. He began rolling up the sleeves of his crisp white shirt, exposing the thick, vein-lined forearms that had been pinned against her waist earlier. "The gala served its purpose," Xavier said, his voice dropping into that smooth, freezing baritone that made it seem like the last six months hadn't just evaporated. "The stock prices for King Enterprises opened five points higher in the European markets an hour ago. The rumors regarding our alliance have been effectively neutralized." Elena let out a sharp, disbelief-filled laugh, stepping into his line of sight. She was still wearing the emerald silk gown, though the zipper was slightly strained and the fabric was heavily wrinkled at the hem. "Is that really what we’re doing, Xavier?" she demanded, her chin lifting in defiance. "You’re going to stand there and talk to me about stock prices? About European markets? After what happened on that desk?" Xavier finally stopped adjusting his sleeves. He looked up, his piercing gray eyes locking onto hers. The coldness in his expression was a stark contrast to the unbridled, dark hunger that had consumed him in the study, but if she looked closely enough, she could see the slight flare of his nostrils. The beast wasn't gone; he was just holding the leash tighter. "What happened in the study was a lapse in judgment," Xavier stated coldly, his voice devoid of any emotion. "An overstimulation of the senses caused by public provocation. It changes nothing regarding the parameters of our arrangement." "A lapse in judgment?" Elena took a step closer, her bare feet padding softly against the hardwood floor. "You came inside me, Xavier. You looked me in the eyes and told me I was yours. You completely destroyed the documents on your desk to take me. Do not look at me right now and pretend that was just a corporate miscalculation." Xavier’s jaw clenched, a dangerous shadow crossing his features. He closed the distance between them in two long, predatory strides, towering over her until his shadow completely swallowed her small frame. "And what would you like me to say, Elena?" he snarled, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly register that vibrated against her chest. "Would you like me to tell you that the second my hands touched your bare skin, I forgot every single strategy I've spent a decade building? Would you like me to admit that the scent of you has been driving me insane for half a year? Yes, I took you. I bent you over a desk and I ruined you just like you wanted. But do not confuse raw, biological lust for something sentimental." The words bit into her, sharp and cold, but Elena didn't flinch. She saw right through the defense mechanism. He was terrified of how much power she had over his legendary control. "I’m not looking for sentimentality, Xavier," she whispered, her voice steady despite the frantic racing of her heart. "I’m looking for truth. You can hide behind your contracts and your boardrooms all you want, but you crossed the line. There is no going back to the way things were. You cannot treat me like a ghost anymore." Xavier stared down at her, his breathing turning heavy, his chest brushing against the front of her gown. For a second, just a fraction of a second, his eyes softened into something deeply conflicted, a turbulent storm of desire and heavy, crushing guilt. He reached up, his large, warm hand hovering just a millimeter away from her cheek, his thumb twitching as if desperately wanting to trace the line of her jaw. But before his skin could make contact, the sharp, intrusive chiming of his encrypted satellite phone shattered the intimacy of the room. The sound was like a bucket of ice water. Xavier snapped out of the trance instantly, his hand dropping back to his side as his expression hardened back into an unreadable mask of stone. He pulled the sleek, black device from his pocket and pressed it to his ear. "Speak," he commanded. Elena watched as the remaining warmth in his face completely drained away. His eyes narrowed into slits, his entire body locking into a rigid, defensive posture that made her stomach drop. Whoever was on the other end of that line was delivering catastrophic news. "When?" Xavier asked, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet whisper that sent a chill straight down Elena’s spine. "Are the feeds secure? Did they leave a trace?" A pause. Xavier listened to the reply, his knuckles turning stark white as his grip on the phone tightened to a breaking point. "Seal the perimeter of the sector," Xavier ordered ruthlessly. "Deploy the secondary extraction team to the Vance estate immediately. If anyone leaks this to the press, I will personally ensure their firm is liquidated by morning." He ended the call, slowly lowering the phone. He didn't look at Elena immediately. Instead, he stared at the dark glass of the penthouse windows, reflecting the expansive city below. "What is it?" Elena asked, a sudden wave of panic tightening her throat. She took a step toward him, her hands reaching out to touch his forearm. "Xavier, what happened? Is it my father?" Xavier turned his head, his gray eyes looking completely detached, filled with a cold, strategic calculation that terrified her more than his anger ever could. "Your father’s secondary safehouse in Zurich was compromised three hours ago," Xavier stated flatly. Elena’s breath hitched, her hand flying to her mouth. "What? Is he... is he alive?" "He wasn't there," Xavier continued, his voice tight. "The extraction team found the facility completely cleared out. But they didn't just raid the place, Elena. They left something behind. A message specifically addressed to me." He walked over to his desk, pulling up a secure, encrypted data feed on his tablet. With a swift swipe of his fingers, he cast the image onto the massive LED screen on the living room wall. Elena turned to look, her heart stopping entirely. It was a live security feed of her father’s abandoned study in Zurich. The room was torn apart, furniture overturned and documents scattered everywhere. But painted directly across the main wall in deep, crimson red paint were four words that made her blood run entirely cold: *THE CONTRACT IS VOID.* Beneath the words, pinned to the drywall with a tactical knife, was a photograph. Elena took a trembling step closer to the screen, her eyes widening in sheer horror. It was a high-resolution, long-lens photograph of her and Xavier on the balcony of the Plaza Hotel from just two hours ago. The image clearly showed Xavier’s hand clamped tightly around her bare waist, his face buried in her neck, his expression completely unraveled by passion. The enemies didn't just know her father was missing. They had been watching her. They had seen the exact moment the untouchable Xavier King broke his own rules. "They were at the gala," Elena whispered, her voice shaking violently as she stared at the photograph. "Victoria... or someone else. They saw us." "They didn't just see us," Xavier said, his voice dropping into a pitch-black, lethal register as he walked up behind her. "They realized what I’ve been trying to hide from them for the last six months. They realized that you are no longer just a contractual obligation to protect my shares." He grabbed her by the shoulders, turning her around forcefully so she had to look into his eyes. There was no lust left in them now only the cold, terrifying resolve of a warlord preparing for slaughter. "By breaking that contract tonight, by showing them that I want you, I gave them a weapon," Xavier whispered fiercely, his grip tightening on her shoulders. "They know I will burn the city down to keep you safe. Which means you are no longer a liability, Elena. You are my absolute vulnerability." Elena swallowed hard, the weight of the photograph and the bloody message sinking deep into her chest. The fake marriage was over. The safety of the rules was gone. The corporate war had just breached the walls of their sanctuary, and her father’s enemies were officially hunting them both. "What do we do?" she asked, her voice hardening, the fear transforming into a sharp, desperate survival instinct. Xavier looked down at her, his eyes locking onto hers with an intense, unbreakable promise. He reached down, his large hand finally cupping her cheek, his thumb wiping away a single tear that had escaped her eye. "We stop playing defense," Xavier growled, his voice echoing in the dark room. "They think they can use you to break me. Tomorrow, I am going to show them exactly what happens when the monster gets unleashed."
