Chapter 4

He was clearly caught off guard. "Lindsay, just let it go while you still can." "I can't," I replied. "If Serene wants to wear that Chanel gown, she can try it on in her dreams. There are no queues there." I hung up. Then, I immediately blocked him. Less than three seconds later, Jonathan's message popped up in the prom group chat. Jonathan: Everyone, please calm down. I've already talked things over with Lindsay. She was just a little emotional, but it's nothing serious. We'll still go try on the dresses tomorrow as planned. I'll handle the details. Serene: Thanks, Jonathan. You're still the only one who can keep things under control. The group was instantly full of people praising him. A: Jonathan stepping in always makes things work! B: Lindsay really does listen to him after all. C: One word from Jonathan saves us the need to argue until our mouths go dry. I stared at my phone screen, so angry that my fingers were trembling. While they were insulting me, they still acted like it was only natural for me to empty my family's collection just to make them look good. I sent one final message. Lindsay: I'll say this one more time. Anyone who comes to the exhibition hall tomorrow to cause trouble will be handled through the proper procedures. Serene: Proper procedures mean fittings. Jonathan followed with another message. Jonathan: Lindsay, don't push this to the point where there's no turning back. I left the group chat and deleted both of them from my contacts. Less than five minutes later, my lecturer and advisor, Mr. Leroy, called me. Mr. Leroy immediately started scolding me. "Lindsay, what are you doing? You're about to graduate, and you're still creating conflicts?" I pressed my fingers against my temples. "Mr. Leroy, I didn't create anything. Serene wanted to rent my mom's gowns, which are valued at 600,000 dollars, for 300 dollars. I simply refused." Mr. Leroy sounded impatient. "The version I heard was that everyone just wanted to borrow some dresses at a mere discount. You're classmates. You should be able to make some compromises. Don't take everything so seriously." "300 for something valued at 600,000 dollars is what you call a mere discount?" He paused for a moment, then his tone became even firmer. "Your family collects antiques. You know better than anyone what those items cost you originally. Don't assume the worst of your classmates. Serene is the class president, and Jonathan is the student director. Their intentions are to make sure the prom goes smoothly." I almost laughed. There it was. It was always about the group. Also, somehow, this group was always very good at picking on the easiest target. I asked him, "Mr. Leroy, if I asked you to loan out your own car to one of my classmates for 300 dollars, would you agree?" Mr. Leroy was caught speechless. Then, he immediately put on a serious tone. "Lindsay, watch your attitude. Your graduation recommendation form is still being reviewed by the department. I also have to write your final evaluation before you graduate. Have you thought about how much trouble you've caused yourself by making the entire class turn against you?" The threat was obvious. Suddenly, I didn't even have the energy to argue anymore. "Mr. Leroy, I understand." He thought I had finally backed down. His tone immediately softened. "That's more like it. Go back to the group and apologize. Tell everyone tomorrow's fitting can continue as planned. As for the price, you're all students. Ask your mom to lower it a little. I'll also talk to Serene and tell her not to make things difficult for you." "Okay." After hanging up, I immediately saved the call recording. Just then, my mom happened to message me. Mother: Coming back to the exhibition hall for dinner tonight? Your dad made oxtail soup. I replied with one word. Lindsay: Yes.
