Act III: The Blood of the Ancestors Kaelen carried her. Despite her protests that she could walk, he had scooped her into his arms as if she weighed no more than a sparrow, wrapping his bear-fur cloak around her shivering frame. The Midnight Crest did not live in caves or ruins. Their home was the Obsidian Citadel—a fortress carved directly into the heart of a dormant volcano deep within the Forbidden Wastes. As they entered, Ayla expected to see savages, monsters, the lawless beasts of Silver-Vane bedtime stories. Instead, she found a thriving, ancient civilization. The air inside the volcano was warm, heated by geothermal vents. Lanterns made of glowing crystals illuminated wide stone streets where men, women, and children walked. They did not look like the lean, starved wolves of the Silver-Vane. They were massive, healthy, their skin glowing with vitality, their eyes all bearing shades of silver, gold, and deep violet. As Kaelen walked through the gates with Ayla in his arms, the entire citadel went silent. Hundreds of pairs of eyes fell upon her. "Alpha," an old woman stepped forward, her hair a cloud of white wool, her eyes a deep, knowing amber. She was the pack's High Shaman, Mona. "What have you brought us from the border?" "Our Luna, Mona," Kaelen said, his voice echoing through the cavernous streets. A collective gasp went through the crowd. Some fell to their knees; others began to whisper in an ancient tongue Ayla didn't understand. "She is wounded," Kaelen continued, his jaw tight. "The Silver-Vane threw her from the Crag. They bound her in cold-iron and wolfsbane." Mona's eyes flashed with anger. "Bring her to the Hearth-Chamber. Quickly." Within hours, Ayla was washed, her wounds dressed with a soothing green paste that stopped the burning of the wolfsbane instantly. She sat on a bed of soft furs, wearing a simple linen tunic provided by the pack women. For the first time in her life, people looked at her not with disgust, but with a reverence that made her deeply uncomfortable. Kaelen entered the chamber, carrying a bowl of hot, aromatic broth. He sat on the edge of the bed, handing it to her. "Eat," he said gently. "You need your strength." Ayla took the bowl, sipping the broth. It was rich, filling her with a sudden, deep warmth. "Why do you call me your Luna? I don't have a wolf, Kaelen. Your people have made a mistake. I am a Dullard. I've never shifted. I can't even hear your pack-link." Kaelen let out a soft, dark laugh. "You can't hear our link because your frequency is too high, Ayla. The Silver-Vane are low-born wolves. They are descendants of the lesser spirits. They cannot comprehend what you are." He leaned in closer, his silver eyes reflecting the firelight. "Do you know why the eclipse turns the moon red?" Ayla shook her head. "It is the blood of the first Goddess, the Moon Mother, crying out for her true children," Kaelen explained. "Centuries ago, the wolves split. The Silver-Vane and their allies chose to suppress their primordial nature, to become smaller, more manageable, more 'human.' They forgot the ancient blood. But my pack kept it. We are the primordial line." He touched her hand, and a jolt of pure electricity shot up Ayla’s arm. It wasn't painful; it felt like a spark falling into a dry forest. Inside her chest, something that had been asleep for eighteen years shifted. It stretched. It growled. Ayla gasped, dropping the bowl. It shattered on the stone floor. "What... what was that?" she breathed, clutching her chest. "That is your wolf," Kaelen said, his voice thick with emotion. "She isn't missing, Ayla. She was locked away. The Silver-Vane pack-bond is like a cage of iron; because you didn't fit into their weak mold, their collective energy suppressed yours, suffocating your spirit. But here, under the red moon, in the presence of your true mate... the cage is breaking." Suddenly, the ground beneath the fortress trembled. A scout burst into the chamber, panting, his silver eyes blown wide with panic. "Alpha! The Silver-Vane. They have crossed the Crag. They are numbering in the thousands. Vardos and his daughter are leading them. They say we have stolen their sacrifice and polluted the sacred night." Kaelen stood up, his entire demeanor changing in a fraction of a second. The gentle mate vanished; the primordial Alpha emerged. His shoulders expanded, his claws elongated, and his silver eyes glowed with a terrifying, lethal light. "They dare step into my woods?" Kaelen growled, the sound rattling the loose stones on the wall. "They believe the Moon Mother has blessed Lira," the scout said. "They say Lira has received the silver aura of the Blessed Luna. They are drunk on the prophecy. They want to wipe us out to cement their ascension." Ayla stood up from the bed. The strange warmth in her chest was growing hotter, turning into a raging fire. "They don't want to wipe you out because of a prophecy," she said, her voice steady. "Vardos wants to destroy you because as long as the Midnight Crest exists, his lie is vulnerable. He knows his power is built on stolen ground." Kaelen turned to her, a proud, vicious smile cutting across his face. "Then let us show them what happens when you try to harvest stolen ground." He looked at the scout. "Assemble the vanguard. We meet them at the Valley of Bones
