Signs of Recovery? Or Is It A Long Road to Recovery?

1950 Words
Almost a week had passed since the incident, and Amelie was beginning to show slight signs of improvement. The belt wounds were now free of infection and the bleeding also had subsided. Her wounds had closed up now so they could heal quicker. She was still unconscious though. While Matt, Bella, Bianca and Dahlia visited her; Lily would stay by her side when she wasn’t on duty. Sienna attended to Amelie daily, while Josh and Nero further investigated the source of the drugs. “Another dead end!” groaned Josh, slamming the receiver down in frustration. Sat with the Alpha in his office, the pair of them convened daily to share updates. All the initial leads had dried up and as far they knew, apart from hospitals and apothecaries in the pack, the only other place that kept such drugs was the Imperium Research Centre. Their investigation would take them there. “I think we will have to take this to her father Nero. We can ask him about the drugs records and policies. I need to talk to him anyway about Amelie’s health and will need his signature to discharge her as her legal guardian. I’m also concerned he hasn’t thought to visit her, I” “Dr. Conway doesn’t know she’s in hospital.” Nero interrupted. “What do you mean? Sienna has been calling and leaving messages at his office.” “And I have blocked them from reaching him.” Josh looked at Nero in disbelief, and then the penny dropped. “He is far from an affectionate father, even I know that. You just don’t want him finding out what you did to her!” “Of course not, but he wouldn’t question me as Alpha anyway. More importantly, he is in the middle of some serious research and I don’t want him to be distracted.” “So, what are you proposing Nero? She needs care and attention; not to be let out and abandoned again.” “I will sign for her release when she is ready. I will make sure she is looked after.” Josh’s expression softened at hearing this momentarily, then it hardened again. “You better not lay another finger on her!” he growled. Nox smirked at his friend in response and raised his hands mock-defensively. “I only want her to get better. Now stop this fatherly act, it is boring. I have arranged for us to meet Conway tomorrow so we can talk about the drugs.” Josh was a little more satisfied with this outcome and then dropped the subject. “Ok, if her progress continues, she should be ready for release by the end of the week.” Matt brought some lunch over to the hospital that day for Lily; he sat down by Amelie while Lily plated up the food. As Matt gazed at her, he could see colour was returning to her cheeks, she was looking a little better every day. “You care about her very much don’t you?” Matt jumped up from his chair and turned to see Sienna standing there. “O-Oh course Dr. Chamberlain! Don’t we all?” Matt replied, trying to stop himself from blushing as he felt his face heat up. “Of course Matt, we all want the best for her; some slightly more than others,” Sienna teased. Matt laughed with her, oblivious to her meaning. “I’m just going to follow up on her bloodwork and I’ll be back to check her vitals.” As Sienna stepped out, Lily returned with a tray holding four bowls of stew. “Was that Sienna I heard a moment ago?” Lily asked, as they both sat at the table in the living room of the suite. “Yes Aunt Lily. She’ll be back to check on Amelie in a little bit.” “Good, I must get her to sit down at eat with us, she’s running herself ragged and beginning to look a little worse for wear.” They continued to eat in a comfortable silence when a quiet whimper filled the room. Matt and Lily looked up at each other and then at where the sound was coming from. Amelie was still sleeping but was whining in her sleep, she was clutching the quilt tightly in her fists and looked very distressed. Her whines turned into whimpers and she was becoming increasingly agitated. Her face began to contort into one of pain and terror. “PLEASE! NO!” Amelie whisper yelled, wriggling in the bed. “I didn’t do it, I promise. Please don’t hurt me, please.” she continued, begging. Lily rushed to Amelie’s side and began to stroke her head gently. Matt stood there frozen rooted to the spot. “You’re safe here sweetheart,” Lily cooed. “Please.” Amelie whispered. “I tried so hard when cleaning, cleaning so hard. So hard. My ribs were broken but I still cleaned your shirt and suit. Please, please believe me.” “It’s ok Amelie, everything will be ok.” “NO! NO! NO!” Amelie screamed, thrashing about, as though she was possessed. “PLEASE NO! I BEG YOU, PLEASE STOP! NOOOOOOOO!” The last scream snapped Matt out of his trance and he mind-linked Dr. Chamberlain. A moment later, Josh rushed into the room with the Sienna close behind. “I’ll hold her down, we need to sedate her before she hurts herself!” shouted Josh, to which Sienna nodded and rushed out again. “Alpha,” Amelie begged again gently, tears staining her face now. Her fists still gripping the quilt, were facing each other as if in prayer. “I didn’t do it, ask Vanessa. I swear on my life, on the Moon Goddess. P-P-Please don’t.” As she finished her last word, Amelie started thrashing again more violently this time and screaming. “NOOOOOOOO! NOOOOOOO! HELP ME! HELP ME PLEEEASE! NOOOOOOO STOP IT! PLEEEEEASE! I BEG YOU PLEEEEEEEASE!” Josh had no choice but to quickly hold her down forcefully before Amelie hurt herself; Sienna returned moments later and administered the sedative. Within a few seconds, Amelie calmed down and settled back into a peaceful sleep. The entire episode had traumatised everyone in the room and not just Amelie. They stood there in silence for a few seconds watching her sleep, as if making sure she wasn’t about to scream again. “Poor child,” Sienna cooed, gently patting Amelie’s head, tears in her eyes. Aunt Lily got to her feet and calmly walked into the kitchen. “What happened to her?” Matt asked, horrified by what he had just witnessed. “What made her so scared?” “She’s suffered a lot of trauma from her injuries Matt,” Sienna carefully explained. “It has been building up for a while now and it’s something that will take time for her heal.” Matt nodded and went and sat in the now vacant seat by Amelie and held her hand, squeezing it gently. There was a few minutes silence in the room. Sensing his distress, Sienna walked over to Josh and pulled him into a tight hug, rubbing his back soothingly “Those screams,” Josh whispered to her. “What screams?” came a hard voice, cutting through the air like a knife. Before anyone could answer Nero, Aunt Lily entered the room again with cups of tea and handed them out. Suddenly, all eyes turned to the Alpha. Although all five of them held steaming mugs of hot tea, it felt like the temperature in the room dropped quite suddenly. “What happened?” Nero asked again, a bit more abruptly. “YOU HAPPENED!” growled Josh, ready to throw his cup at his friend. “WATCH WHAT YOU SAY JOSH! REMEMBER YOUR PLACE!” came the arrogant reply. “YOU remember YOUR place the next time YOU think about hurting an innocent child!” Sienna shouted back defiantly. “I AM SICK of patching up this poor child, this living, breathing football only for it to be kicked again!” Nero’s eyes darkened and he was about to launch himself at the pair of doctors when Aunt Lily stepped in the way and glared at him. “Don’t you think there’s been enough mindless violence Nero?” Lily scoffed. “Haven’t you learnt anything from this situation?” Nero took a few deep breaths and stepped back. After he calmed himself and his wolf down he spoke. “I understand what I did to that Omega was wrong, but there was no need to speak to me with such disrespect.” Josh and Sienna calmed down upon hearing the Nero’s words; they nodded and bowed in respect. “Sorry Alpha,” replied Josh. “She’s almost the same age as Phoebe, my little sister. I get a little upset.” “What screams were you talking about?” Nero asked again. “Amelie has not regained consciousness yet. but today she was close. She was screaming , whimpering and thrashing about in her sleep,” explained Lily. “It sounded like she was reliving the trauma; she was appealing to you Alpha during her episode. It was just before you,” explained Josh, deliberately pausing. Nero nodded in response and put his cup of tea down. He began to pace the room out of habit and then stopped to ask a question. “Why would you administer wolfsbane and ketamine to an Omega, that also to an Omega that doesn’t even have a wolf? "Ketamine Alpha?" asked Matt. "Amelie had ketamine in her system?" "Yes why? Do you know something about it?" Matt paused and then look a little uncomfortable. Lily sensing this, consoled him. "It's ok Matt, you won't be in trouble. Explain to the Alpha what you know. It's all for Amelie remember?" Matt cleared his throat and explained. "Alpha, there might be traces of ketamine in her system because I know she was taking small amounts of something as a pain killer and sedative. I don't know how she managed to get some but her pain would often cripple her or keep her awake at night." The Alpha nodded, slightly relieved that there was a legitimate reason for the ketamine, he considered now that perhaps she might have acquired a small amount herself from somewhere. While this still needed rationalising, there was also the unexplained case of the wolfsbane. "Thank you Matt, that was invaluable information,' said Nero appreciatively. "It will still be worth asking Dr. Conway about this tomorrow right?" Josh added. "Yes we will talk to him," Nero replied. "Oh Alpha!" Matt asked suddenly, then turned tempered his tone down a little. "Dr. Conway was looking for Amelie a few days ago. He called her just after she disappeared and well he was expecting her to call him back." "I'll take care of it," Nero reassured him. A-And the culprit who got Amelie into trouble?" Matt asked. "I have taken care of it. Vanessa will not be troubling anyone again." With that said, Matt made his excuses and scurried back to the pack house for his evening shift and to update the others. While he knew now what fate had befallen Amelie and the probable role that Vanessa had played, he didn't fully trust the Alpha around Amelie. While Matt was too weak to challenge the Alpha or speak up without risking punishment, he promised himself he would do his best to look out for Amelie. Lily stayed the night by Amelie's side, wanting to be there in case she woke up. So was Nero.
