What If I Was Wrong?

Nero zipped up his trousers after relieving himself all over Amelie and looked down at the Omega lying motionless on the floor. "Get up you b***h!" he commanded, but there was no movement. Nero gave her a sharp kick to the stomach and her body just lay there; there was no response. Nero fisted her hair and pulled her head up; she didn't make a sound, she had passed out. The sickly stench of piss and blood which filled the cell, began to offend Nero's nostrils. "Leave her here and lock the cell," Nero ordered the guards and left. Back in the kitchen, there was extreme worry breaking out amongst everyone after they saw the Alpha drag Amelie out kicking and screaming. Bianca and Dahlia were crying because they dreaded to think what the Alpha would do to Amelie and they couldn't do anything about it. For Amelie, the day had been awful from the beginning, to the very bitter end. Straight after Amelie was dragged out, Matt, Bella and Jake came rushing into the kitchen to ask what had happened as Dahlia had mind-linked them. Bianca explained how Vanessa beat Amelie that morning and then explained the altercation that happened shortly after with the Alpha and Beta that landed her in hot water. After explaining what had happened when the Nero stormed in a few minutes ago, Bella realised why Amelie never made it to college that day. The dinner service continued as normal, but the usual lively atmosphere in the kitchen became a subdued one. Dinner came and went. The kitchen was closed by 8:30 every evening and the Omegas could eat any leftovers that remained. There was hardly anything left, but none of them had an appetite anyway. It had been three hours since the Alpha took Amelie away and there was no news. Each of them had tried to mind-link her but the link was blocked. Amelie either didn't want to talk, or she couldn't. They all sat around the kitchen playing with their scraps of food, unable to eat a bite. "I'm going to check if she's returned to her room," said Bianca, agitated, and unable to sit there doing nothing. "I'll come with you," Bella replied rising to her feet. Suddenly a phone started ringing, breaking the silence in the kitchen; all the staff couldn't tell where it was coming from. Following the sound, Jake traced it to a shelf above the bench on the far side of the kitchen. "It's Dr. Conway! Amelie's father! What are we going to tell him?" Jake asked panicking. "Give it to me," replied Matt holding out his hand. "Hello Dr. Conway? It's Matt." "Oh, hello Matt, how are you?" "I'm fine thank you sir, how are you?" "I am well thank you son. I was wondering if Amelie is with you, I have her notes from her teacher who dropped them by, I heard she had to skip school today." "I'm sorry sir, but I don't know where Amelie is. She got pulled away for something by the Alpha and Beta." "Ok, could you please ask her to call me back when you see her?" "Yes sir." Matt cut the call and realised what had to be done. "Come on everyone! Let's clear the kitchen up and go look for Amelie." "Surely if Amelie had cleaned the Alpha's and Beta's garments which sparked this whole problem, someone in the laundry room must have seen her," said Bella thinking out loud. "Let's re-trace her steps from today," suggested Jake. They split up and between them went to all of Amelie's usual places. They checked her room and asked the other Omegas in the wing if they had seen Amelie; there was no luck. Some of them went to the medical centre and Dr. Chamberlain did indeed confirm treating Amelie earlier that day. A couple of them went to the laundry room and spoke to Lily who had also spent some time Amelie that day. However, apart from confirming that Amelie went to the medical centre, and that she had indeed cleaned and pressed the Alpha's and Beta's clothes, nothing seemed out of the ordinary; yet something had clearly gone very wrong. They needed some answers from the Beta as they couldn't challenge the Alpha. However, it was getting late now and so with heavy hearts, they decided to continue the investigation tomorrow. Matt held onto Amelie's phone in case anyone called. The Alpha sat in his study reviewing some reports with a bottle of whiskey for company. On days like this when he was riled up, he would throw himself into one of two things. He would either train hard or bury himself in pack work. Tonight, it was the latter that he was knee-deep in. He was reviewing the data from some of the research programmes that were ongoing and was considering what to keep investing in and what new opportunities could be pursued. He was pouring himself another drink when he heard a gentle knock on his door. Without opening it, he knew who it was. It was one of the few women in his life that he respected aside from his mother. He smiled, stepping aside to let her enter. They both walked over to the settee and sat opposite each other. ----------- Amelie still lay in a crumpled heap on the cold hard floor of the cell, unconscious. As the Alpha beat her mercilessly, all she could think about was dying. She wanted to die so desperately. She knew she was an orphan from a young age, that she was adopted. Dr. Conway made sure he told her that as soon as she was of an age that she understood. Although Amelie didn't know he had saved her from death when she was an infant, perhaps looking back at her life, death would have been a kinder option. While Dr. Conway provided her with the basic essentials, he was always too busy in his work to give any real attention to Amelie. Due to her illness, his mate who was unable to conceive was overjoyed when Christian brought Amelie home. His mate died prematurely because she was sick and after that, Christian threw himself more and more into his research. He would leave Amelie in the pack's crêche and then nursery for weeks on end. On the occasions that Amelie did spend time with him, she took a great deal of interest in his work and science. When Amelie was old enough to go to school, she would go every day until she turned 11 years old. School was a harsh time as everyone knew she was an orphan. Dr. Conway made sure nobody knew Amelie was the result of an experiment, but he didn't protect her like a father should. She has been ostracised since the very beginning. From the age of 11, Amelie split her time between school and her Omega training and duties. She was still subjected to daily physical and verbal abuse; because her adopted father didn't care enough, neither did anyone else. Dealing with so much at such young age meant she had to weather it all without her wolf and the scars it left would run deep. As she collapsed on the floor after the beating, Amelie was slipping in and out of consciousness. The pain was searing through her back and then through her entire body, which combined with the smell of blood was making her dizzy. She retreated into herself as she lay on the floor, but, as she looked up and saw the Alpha opening his trousers, she whimpered. She didn't have the strength to move. Suddenly, she felt something warm drip onto her back causing her back to burn and sting. She had barely any strength left to scream and the stress of it all caused her to pass out as she murmured a wish to die. ----------- "What brings you to my door at this time of night Aunt?" "Nero, I just received a report of the most alarming nature and I am praying to the Moon Goddess that it isn't true. I raised you better than that." "You did raise me better than that," Nero smirked. "What did you hear?" "A young girl, beaten black and blue came to me today in the laundry room, she was frightened out of her skin and was asking about your clothes; she spent hours cleaning and pressing your clothes for you and Carter I believe?" "What about her?" Nero's eyes became darker. "Well, that's just it, Nero. She spent such a long time perfectly preparing your clothes; she packed them up to deliver to you around half three." ""Is there a point to this story Aunt Lily?" Nero asked, his patience beginning to erode away. "I heard that she was dragged away from her work this evening and punished because her work was not up to scratch?" Lily asked delicately. No-one in the pack knew what had actually happened to Amelie; they all gossiped and just assumed she was dragged away for doing something stupid. "That's one way of describing it," Nero replied, trying his best to remain calm. "Nero my boy, I don't know what you think that child has done, but I swear to you she put her heart into everything she did. She did her job with great respect and skill." Whether it was her precise choice of words or whether it was because Lily was defending her, Nero couldn't tolerate one more word. "Since you are the highest authority on such matters Aunt Lily, do you know what she did to get punished?" Nero growled sarcastically. "Don't you dare use that tone with me boy! You may be Alpha, but I am not afraid to tell you when you are wrong! And I have NO qualms about teaching you a lesson or two on how to speak to your elders!" Lily shouted at him. Nero took a step back and looked a bit hurt for a moment, but then changed his expression to a sour one. "I am the Alpha and will speak how I please." "No, you are a drunk, lonely man who needs a strong woman to tell him when he is wrong!" "I am not drunk!" "Your breath says otherwise!" "Shut up, you old woman!" "ENOUGH!" Lily shouted at the top of her lungs standing up and glaring at him. "I didn't come here to be insulted; I came here to help you. Clearly you are beyond help. I tell you once and I tell you again, whatever you think she's done-" "I'll show you what she's done!" Nero growled and stormed out of the room. A few seconds later, he returned with a black bag inside which, lay the remnants of his clothes. He took each item out; the jacket, the trousers and the shirt and he threw them on the floor to show Lily. "This is what your precious Omega has done! She destroyed my clothes and pissed on them!" Lily stopped and stared at the clothes strewn across the floor. She knelt down and touched each item of clothing carefully and her eyes began to glisten with tears, and she shook her head. "What? You can't believe that your precious Omega did this to me?" Nero sneered. "No. I KNOW that girl can't have done this. What I CAN'T believe is my boy is blind. He doesn't know what goes on in his pack." "GET OUT!" Nero roared. "GET OUT OF MY SIGHT!" Lily calmly rose to her feet, walked over to Nero and slapped him across his face. "You're a disgrace Nero. You're no Alpha of mine," she replied calmly, and then confidently strode out of his suite closing the door behind her. Nero knocked back the whiskey in his glass and roared, hurling the glass at the door, causing it to shatter. "f**k!" he shouted. "What the f**k is going on?" Nero sat down on the settee and held his head in his hands. He eyed the clothes on the floor, his eyes then wandered up to where he had found it draped on the back of the settee facing him. He recalled the way the Omega denied any wrongdoing, the way she screamed and begged, the innocence she had in her red, blotchy eyes. As he mulled over the situation a little more, a horrible thought popped into his head. 'What if I was wrong?'
