After the movie, Christie and I pick up a pizza for dinner. When we pull into the driveway, Monie and her parents are sitting on the porch sipping wine and talking. I hand the pizza to Christie and tell her to take it inside, then follow along. As Christie runs past them for the door, Joe speaks up. “Eh, no hug for your nonno and nonna? Christie stops and sets the pizza box down, and as she gives her grandmother a hug, I see Sophie turn a meaningful gaze to my wife. I know that motherly Italian look, the one that says, what can you do? “How was the movie?” Joe asks pulling Christie into a hug as I come up the stoop. “It was great,” Christie gushes, then forgetting the pizza, gives everyone a blow-by-blow account of how the main character, Sara, endured the cruelty of the boarding school
