Married At First Sight

CHAPTER 2

Chris Connor's POV

*TOOT* *TOOT* *TOOT*

I reached for my phone on the table and stopped the alarm clock.

I sat down and when I noticed I had no one next to me, the bathroom door opened. Max came out of the bathroom with his lower body covered with his towel. He went straight to the closet and looked for something to wear.

"You're leaving this early?" I asked, then I walked towards him.

"Good morning, babe. Yeah, I'm leaving early today. We have a lot of work to do today. Sorry, babe." He said while looking for something to wear.

"It's fine. I'll cook now so you can bring your lunch."

"No need, babe. I'll just eat there " He said while wearing his pants.

"Oh. Okay, babe." I just handed him his shoes and when he was dressed I send him to the garage.

He went inside the car and started the engine. He rolled down the window "Babe, please open the gate. Thank you, love you."

I did what he asked and went to the side of the gate to open it. I thought he would kiss me as he always does.

"Bye, babe. See you later. I love you!" He said then he drove away.

"Bye. I-I love you." I whispered even though I knew he wouldn't hear it because he left already.

He's also been in a rush before but he had never forgotten to kiss or hug me. Never mind, I'm probably just overthinking.

Weeks passed and he was always in a hurry. I'll wake up seeing him dressed up and hurry to leave, I would take him to the garage and open the gate then feed our pets and cook food just for me. I will not cook anything in the evening because he already said that he was eating before coming home. I'll sleep early then tomorrow everything will be the same. That became our life cycle.

'I hope he'll not be busy tomorrow. I hope tomorrow is different. I wish...I wish he remembers that tomorrow is our 9th anniversary.'

All the things I wanted to happen today didn't happen. Just like in the past few days...he left early but the thing that's different from the other days-we ate together and he hugged me.

I think asking for his attention today is too much that God only let me have lunch with him.

Honestly, what happened earlier didn't make me happy, because it seems like he forgot that today is our anniversary. He didn't even greet me with a happy anniversary.

But I'm not giving up, I'm still hoping for him to call me and greet me, and in case he won't do it, I'll just go where he works and surprise him with delicious food.

For now, I'll just clean the house and feed the bunnies.

I started cleaning our room, brooming the floor and under the bed, wiping the picture frames and the trophies and medals that both I and my boyfriend got when we were still studying. After cleaning the picture frames, trophies, and medals...I also moped the floor.

After cleaning our room, the next part of the house that I'm going to clean is the kitchen. I'm the only one who ate lunch so I don't have a lot of dishes to wash.

After the kitchen, the next one is the living room. I rearranged the living room. I switched the sofa's and the television's positions. I removed the dust on the ceiling and cleaned the accessories in the living room.

The last part of the house that I'm going to clean is the garden, I will be cleaning my rabbits' habitat. Cleaning and removing all of the hay and vegetables that they didn't eat. I also clean the rabbits with wet wipes, rabbits like to clean themselves so I don't need to bathe them.

After cleaning the whole house I went to our living room to sit and rest for a while before taking a bath.

*Phone Rings*

I fetch my phone from my pocket to see who's calling.

*Mother is calling*

It is my mother so I immediately answer the call.

"Hi, Mom!" I missed her so much.

[Hi, son. How are you?]

"I'm fine, Mom. How about you and Dad?"

[We're fine, your dad is... sulking right now.] She whispered, I bet she doesn't want Dad to hear it.

"Why? Why is he sulking?"

'Dad is the girl in their relationship, in the past, Dad sulks whenever he sees Mom talking to other guys. And when I was still young, I teased Dad every time he got jealous because of some guy even though they were already married for a long time.'

[He just misses you so bad, you didn't visit us last year and you haven't visited us this year. We missed you so much.] I can hear that she's about to cry, that's my mom, she gets emotional every time we talk.

"I miss you both. Sorry, Mom for not visiting you both there. Max has been so busy these past few days, he even leaves early in the morning."

[I understand, son. I really do. I just hope that you both can visit us here.]

"We'll find time, Mom. I promise."

[*sniff* Anyway, the reason why I called you is I remember that today is your 9th anniversary, Happy anniversary to both of you and tell Max I missed him too. When you two go here, I'll buy you a lot of gifts.]

"Thank you, Ma. But you don't have to buy us gifts, your support and love for us are enough already. Stop spoiling us."

I'm so thankful to have a mother like her. She is more than the best, the word 'best' is not enough to describe my mom.

[I'm spoiling you both because you're my only son and because Max has been a good boyfriend to you. He's such a hardworking boyfriend and he loves you so much.]

"Oh, thank you, Mom."

[You're welcome. I need to go, son. I still need to cook, I don't want your father to starve.]

"Me too, Mom, I'll cook Max's favorite food for tonight. Take care, I love you. Tell Dad I love him. Bye"

[I'll tell him you love him. Bye]

*Call Ended*

After the call, I stood up and went to the kitchen to cook Max's favorite food-Chow Mein. It is a Chinese stir-fried noodle with vegetables and sometimes meat or tofu. This time, I'll be using meat to make it more special since Max really likes meat.

Max loves it so much, he literally can eat it every day.

After cooking Chow Mein, I walk towards the cupboard and get his favorite bento box and go back to where I was standing earlier and prepare my boyfriend's food. I put the Chow Mein on the part of the bento that has a bigger space and I put different fruits on small boxes.

When I was done preparing our food I closed the bento box and left it on the table. I went to our room to change my clothes. I went out of our room and wrapped the bento box with the cloth.

Before I left I went to the garden and fed my rabbits.

After feeding the rabbits I went back into the house to get the bento box, I went straight to the shoe rack behind the door and wore my favorite black shoes. I went out of the door and locked it. While walking toward the gate, I checked my watch and saw that it was almost their lunch break. I went out of the gate and locked it, after locking the gate the cab that I booked just arrived.

I opened the back door and hopped in. "Sorry for being late, sir." the driver said.

"No, you're just in time," I replied, as I gave him the address of the place I'm going to.

The driver smiled and started the engine. I feel nervous and excited at the same time. I think it's because our past anniversary wasn't like this. Like last year, we just went on a three-day vacation in Hawaii.

I think I'm nervous about how he will react and I'm excited because this is the only time I'm going there that's not work-related.

Without even knowing we already arrived at my destination. I just got back to my senses when the car driver called me, so I paid the driver and got out of the cab. I'm now standing in front of the publishing company where my boyfriend works.

'You can do this, yourself. He'll be really surprised when he sees you.'

I walked up the stairs and opened the glass door, the guard smiled at me. "Hello, Sir., gonna publish another book?" he asked with a smile.

"Uhm, No. I'm here to surprise Max. Is he in his office?"

"I'm not sure, sir. I'm afraid you need to call him first before going there just to make sure he's not in a meeting or you can just wait for him, everyone will go home early today."

'I should've just waited for him at home but I'm here already, so there's no turning back.'

"Okay, thank you." I smiled and then went to the coffee shop here in the building.

I looked for a vacant table and sat there. A waitress asked for my order and I just ordered a black coffee. After a while, I decided to call Max.

*Phone Rings*

After a few rings, he finally answered the call.

[Hello, babe? What's with the sudden call?]

"I just miss you, are you busy?" I asked

[No, not really, why?]

"Nothing, babe. Anyway, are you going home early today?" I don't know why I asked that even though the guard told me about it already.

[Uhm...I-I'm not sure, babe.] He answered in a whisper.

'Wait..huh? But the guard said...' His answer made me sit straight. 'I think he just wanted to finish all the paperwork today. Yeah, right, that's why.'

"Uhm..okay. A-are you with someone right now?" Why is he even whispering?

[No...babe. I'm alone here in my office...uhm why did you suddenly ask such a question?]

"Nothing, babe, I'm just curious."

[Okay...Uh...babe I gotta go.]

"Okay, I love you."

[You too, bye] and just like that, the call ended. He's still not greeting me with a happy anniversary. I guess he's too busy and he forgets our anniversary.

An hour passed by, and some of the employees went home already.

Once again, an hour passed, and I just finished drinking my second coffee when I saw one of Max's friends.

"Hey, Mark!" He turned his head in my direction and gazed at me. He looked shocked.

"Oh, h-hey, Mr. Connor!" He walked toward me and sat on the chair in front of me. "W-why are you here, Mr. Connor?"

"Oh c'mon, stop calling me Mr. Connor, just call me Chris," I told him.

"Oh, okay Mr.— I mean Chris. So, what brought you here? You've got another book to publish?" He asked.

"No. I'm here to surprise my boyfriend, today is our anniversary so I decided to bring him his favorite food." I said, then I lifted the bento box.

"Oh that's sweet, I wish I had a boyfriend like you. Max is indeed lucky to have you, Chris."

"Awe thank you"

"You're welcome...anyway, I have to go." He stood up and fixed the chair in front of me.

"Okay, take care. Bye"

"Buh-bye" I nodded, waved my hand, and smiled at him then he left.

After Mark left I stood up and decided to go to Max's office. I bet he's fixing his things already.

I got out of the coffee shop and went to the elevator. When I'm already in front of the elevator I pushed the button and waited for the door to open.

After a while, the door opened and I immediately went in and pushed the button for the 9th floor.

I get more nervous every time the elevator passes a floor.

7...

8...

9...

*ting!*

The door opened and I took a deep breath before going out of the elevator.

I started walking when the elevator door closed. I kept walking until I reached his office. I don't feel nervous anymore, I feel more excited. I am looking forward to his reaction.

I stared at his door for a few seconds before opening it.

And then I saw him-

"Love, more, please..."

...with a woman...

"Hmm, darling, kiss me more..."

...making out on the table..

I dropped the bento box and that's the time when they noticed me.

"Babe, who is he? Your friend?" The woman asked.

I barely pray, but now I'm doing it. I'm praying that he'll say I'm his boyfriend and he'll leave the girl behind.

But he didn't say a word, he just stared at me like he saw a ghost.

"Hi, I'm Sandra, his girlfriend. Uhm...I'm sorry you for what you saw and...can you just go back later?" she politely said.

I came back to my senses and smiled "I-I'm sorry, I didn't know you were here." I'm trying not to cry even though my eyes wanted to. I picked up the bento box and handed it to the woman. She's wearing a simple sleeveless office dress but it's too fitted that her cleavage is about to pop out.

When she was already holding the bento box, I looked at Max. "That's the f-food you ask me to cook, b-bro." I heaved a deep sigh "I gotta go, b-bye." I didn't wait for them to say anything, I can't hold my tears anymore. I wanted to cry.

I was right in front of the elevator when the elevator opened and I saw Mark, I thought he left already.

"Chris, a-are you crying?" he asked but I ignored him, so I went inside the elevator without looking at him.

The door is about to close but he doesn't do anything and stays inside the elevator. What is he doing?

The elevator feels slower. I want to get out of this thing now.

When the door opened, I got out of the elevator immediately and ran outside the main door. I even heard Mark and the guard calling me, but I ignored them. I didn't waste every second, I ran as fast as I could.

I crossed the road without looking if a car would hit me, I just didn't care, the pain I'm feeling right now made me stop caring for my surroundings even though I heard loud horns everywhere.

People are looking at me, they are whispering and asking why I'm running and crying, but no f'cks given. I don't care what they will think about me, I just run and run and run until I realize I reached my favorite bar.

I went inside the bar and a piece of loud music welcomed me. I wiped my tears and walked straight towards the bar counter.

"Hey, Chris! Long time no see!" Yu Ning waived his right hand with a wide smile. I just sat on the chair and look at him.

"Wait here," he said, then he talked to a guy next to him, then he took off his apron, went out of the bar counter, and walked towards me. "Come with me." he pulled me and we went into a room.

It's kinda dark, the best place to let out a problem.

"So what happened?" Yu Ning asked after we sat on a circular sofa.

I chuckled, "You didn't even ask me if I had a problem or what my problem was."

"I know you too well, bro. Even though we don't see each other often. So tell me, what happened?" That made me smirk.

"Let me order some drinks first," I said. He just nodded and pushed the red button on the wall. That button is connected to the bar counter, a bulb will light up there as a signal that we need something. Yu Ning's bar is amazing.

After a while, a waiter came in. I ordered a tequila while Yu Ning ordered a beer. He said that no one will send me home if he'll drink a hard one.

When the waiter got out of the room, Yu Ning asked me once again but I told him that I'll tell him everything when the drinks came, and he just sighs.

I keep avoiding his questions not because I don't want to tell him what happened but because I don't know where to start.
