Chapter 4

Selena's Pov “Grab her!” I turned and ran before my brain could even think properly. My footsteps echoed wildly through the underground garage while terrified breaths tore from my throat. Behind me, men started shouting. I nearly slipped while sprinting between cars. Gunshots still echoed somewhere in the garage while fear consumed every part of my body. My hands shook so badly I almost dropped my bag again. This couldn’t be happening. I heard footsteps chasing after me. Tears blurred my vision while I pushed myself harder toward the elevator near the exit. My chest burned painfully from fear and exhaustion. The elevator doors started closing the moment I reached them. “No no no” I threw myself forward and hit the button repeatedly. The doors reopened just enough for me to stumble inside. The second they shut again, I collapsed against the wall while trying to breathe properly. My heart felt like it was trying to explode. The image of that man shooting someone without hesitation replayed inside my head over and over again. His face stayed cold the entire time. Like murder meant absolutely nothing to him. The elevator finally opened into the restaurant hallway upstairs. I pushed through the kitchen doors while nearly crashing into another waiter. They turned toward me in confusion, but I didn’t stop. I grabbed my jacket near the staff lockers and rushed outside into the rain. Three men in black suits had already entered the street. I turned and ran through the crowded sidewalk while people shouted angrily as I pushed past them. My breathing became uneven from panic. A black SUV suddenly pulled beside the sidewalk near me. The back door opened. I darted across the street while horns blared loudly around me. Tires screeched nearby as another black vehicle blocked the road ahead. Someone grabbed my arm violently from behind. I screamed and fought hard, but another man covered my mouth instantly. “Stop fighting.” I kicked one of them hard enough to make him curse, then broke free for half a second before another pair of arms grabbed me again. “Please!” My voice shook badly. “Please let me go!” Nobody answered. The men dragged me toward the SUV while panic exploded inside my chest. Oh God, my mother was alone at the hospital. “Please!” Tears filled my eyes. “I need to see my mom!” One of the men opened the vehicle door while another shoved me inside. I hit the leather seat painfully before trying to scramble back out again. Then I saw him. Sitting across from me inside the dark SUV. My breathing stopped completely. Up close, he looked even more dangerous. Dark eyes, sharp jaw and a black coat stained faintly with blood. His expression remained calm while chaos surrounded him like it belonged there. The vehicle doors slammed shut. “No!” I grabbed the handle immediately. “Stop the car!” Panic rushed through me so hard I could barely think. I pulled at the door again before throwing myself toward the opposite side. “Please let me out!” I screamed. But nobody answered. The men beside me stayed silent while the city lights blurred outside the windows. I looked toward Him with pure fear. “Who are you?” My chest rose and fell unevenly. “Why are you doing this?” Something about his silence terrified me more than shouting would have. “You can’t kidnap people!” I yelled. “Do you know how insane this is?” One of the guards near the front almost laughed. I looked back at Him desperately. “Please my mother’s in the hospital.” For the first time, his eyes shifted slightly. “She’s sick,” I continued with tears in my voice. “She has cancer. I need to go back.” “I won’t tell anyone what I saw,” I said desperately. “Please just let me go.” The car kept moving through the rain. My pulse pounded painfully inside my ears while panic consumed every thought in my head. Then suddenly, anger exploded through me. “You’re insane!” I shouted. “All of you are insane!” One of the guards looked annoyed. “Watch your mouth.” “No!” I screamed. “You murdered people!” The man sitting beside me finally spoke. “You were in the wrong place.” I stared at him in disbelief. “You killed someone!” “He betrayed me.” The answer came so easily it made my stomach twist. Like betrayal automatically deserved death. “What kind of person are you?” I whispered. His dark eyes met mine. “The kind you should fear.” The car turned sharply onto another road. Rain slammed against the windows harder now while the city lights disappeared behind us. They were taking me somewhere far away. Nobody knew where I was and nobody would come looking for me. I couldn’t let this happen. The moment one of the guards unlocked the doors slightly while speaking into his earpiece, I moved without thinking and grabbed the handle and shoved the door open. I threw myself toward the opening. Strong hands grabbed my wrist instantly before I could jump onto the road. I screamed as he yanked me backward hard enough to slam me against his chest. The vehicle door shut again while one of the guards cursed loudly. My entire body shook violently from panic. “Let me go!” I fought against him desperately. “Let me go!” His grip tightened around my wrist painfully. Then he leaned closer slightly. “If I wanted you dead,” he said calmly, “you already would be.” The words hit me harder than a slap. Cold fear spread through every part of me. Because deep down… I believed him. I stopped struggling after that, not because I trusted him but because I realized something terrifying. These people were completely in control and I wasn’t escaping them. The rest of the drive passed in horrible silence. I sat pressed against the opposite door while trying not to cry. Every few minutes, I looked outside hoping to recognize somewhere familiar, but we kept driving farther away from the city. Eventually large iron gates appeared ahead of us. The gates slowly opened as the car entered a massive property surrounded by walls and armed guards. This place looked like something owned by kings. Massive dark windows. Marble stairs. Security everywhere. The entire property looked expensive and terrifying at the same time. The car stopped near the entrance. One of the guards opened my door. “Get out.” Fear settled heavily inside my chest while I stepped onto the wet pavement. More armed men stood near the entrance watching me carefully. I turned toward Derevoux again. “Please…” My voice broke. “I need to call the hospital.” He walked past me without answering. Like I wasn’t even human enough to respond to. Tears burned my eyes again while another guard pushed me gently toward the mansion doors. The inside looked just as intimidating as the outside. Giant chandeliers hung from high ceilings while marble floors reflected soft golden lights. Everything looked perfect but none of that mattered because I was trapped. A maid entered quietly before leading me upstairs through endless hallways. Every door looked expensive enough to belong inside a palace. Finally, she stopped outside one room and opened the door slowly. “Stay here.” Then she left. I rushed toward the windows, but thick iron gates covered the outside. I backed away slowly while tears filled my eyes. I tried waking my self up from the dream because this can't be real. But unfortunately it was and I had been kidn*pped by murderers. Eventually exhaustion pulled me down onto the edge of the massive bed. My body still shook from fear while my mind replayed everything over and over again. I didn’t know how long I sat there before sleep finally dragged me under. But when I woke up again, the room was dark. And someone was standing near the doorway. My breath caught instantly. He stepped fully into the room and the door shut behind him.
