Watching Kai hold Luna while she cried into his shoulder did something to me I wasn't prepared for. Something that cracked the careful walls I'd spent three years building. Because he looked like a natural at it. Like he'd been comforting scared children his whole life instead of meeting them yesterday.
"Shh, sweetheart. You're safe." His voice was so gentle, so different from the cold Alpha who'd rejected me. "No bad man is going to take you. I promise."
"Don't make promises you can't keep," I said, but my heart wasn't in the reprimand. Luna's sobs were quieting, her little body relaxing against him. Whatever gift she had for reading emotions was telling her Kai meant what he said.
Aiden tugged on my sleep shirt. "Mommy, I'm scared too. What if the bad man comes?"
