Chapter Ten
Standoff
Penny and David were standing on the porch. Some ten metres to their right was Harry Appleton. He had been on his way to Alex to borrow some tools. On the forecourt facing them was Mister Jennings standing in front of Penny’s car, and behind him his own car, leaning against which was a burly, surly man who did violence for a living.
“I’m sorry, Princess—”
“Don’t call me that!”
“Sorry, love. Look, come back with me. It’ll all be alright, I promise. I’m going to promote you. More money. Take your Mum on holiday—”
“Poor Mum!”
He concentrated on not seeming to lose his temper. “By the way, Paul Leatherland… He said you’d been out clubbing together?”
Penny rolled her eyes.
“He’s called in sick. Any idea why?”
“Maybe he’s sick?” offered Penny. helpfully.
