The store was situated a little further down the cobblestone path and away from the town's center where the conversations were louder and the town in general was more busy. But they would not be walking through the center of the town. As mother closed and locked the front door, Lucy gazed down the road where the town center was and she thought about what it looked like and how busy it might have been. She also thought about the people who might have known her and who would recognize her, though she did not recognize herself any more than they did. Mother noticed that her daughter was very quiet and distance. Lucy was normally a bright and cheery girl but ever since that morning, she had been on the quieter side and would claim that she had forgotten the most basic things about her life.
