Chapter Seven

489 Words
After a long day at work, I returned home and quickly freshened up. Mrs. Omar noticed my nervous habit of rubbing my hands together and kindly offered me a cup of tea. I took it gratefully, feeling the warmth of the ceramic mug in my hands. As I sipped the soothing tea, my gaze was drawn to the old scrapbook I had kept since childhood, filled with memories. The tea worked its magic, and the day's exhaustion finally caught up with me. I drifted into a light slumber but was abruptly awakened by the jarring sound of my phone. My heart raced as I fumbled to check the message. It was from Indy. She asked if I'd like to join her for dinner. My instincts immediately warned me that this wasn't just a casual dinner invitation. Indy had her sights set on Benjamin and this dinner was a ploy to get closer to him. We both knew that our marriage was merely a formality for our families, born of circumstances, and devoid of any real affection I accepted her invitation with a sigh Indy, perhaps unsurprisingly, wasted no time in offering to pick me up. I declined her offer, insisting that I'd meet her at the restaurant of her choice. As I arrived at the restaurant, I noticed she had already reserved a table, and she greeted me with a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. "I thought you were going to ditch me after saying yes," she teased as the waiter took our orders. I knew the real purpose of this dinner was about to be revealed soon "Indy," I began, My unease growing, "What is it that you wanted to talk about?" She leaned in, her voice lower, and her expression more serious. "I'm in love with Benjamin," she confessed. "And since your relationship with him is far from serious, I want to make my move. I need your help." I couldn't hide my shock. "Are you serious?" I asked, irritation bubbling up within me. Indy's response was nonchalant. "Yes," she said, rolling her eyes. "Your arranged marriage means nothing, and I love him. We're sisters, and if he leaves you and starts dating me, it won't change anything between us. We might even end up getting married." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "Benjamin is my husband," I said firmly. "Under no circumstances will I support what you're suggesting." I couldn't hold back my frustration any longer. "We may have a so-called fake marriage, but that doesn't change the fact that we're married. Your attempts to get close to him will only make you appear desperate. And have you no shame, trying to woo your own sister's husband?" She tried to justify herself. "I knew him before you, and..." I cut her off, my tone now laced with irritation. "It doesn't matter. I'm his wife now. Stop this nonsense and think about what you're doing."
