Su Yin’s Gambit

728 Words
The wall was chaos. Wind screamed. Men shouted. Below, a black sea of enemy warriors crashed against the fortress. Ling Han shouted orders. His face was hard. His men scrambled to obey. Su Yin stood beside him. She was supposed to feel the earth. She felt nothing but fear and hate. Hate for him. Hate for this war. But her eyes saw what others did not. The enemy pushed hardest in the middle. But their right side was weak. The ground there was rocky and uneven. Their shields dipped with every step. The enemy archers shot from a hill. But the wind blew hard from the west. Their arrows fell short. Ling Han’s men were defending. They were not attacking. They were losing. A giant log, a battering ram, moved toward the main gate. The guards there were scared. Their arrows could not stop it. Ling Han turned to a captain. "Take twenty men to the gate! Hold it or die!" "No." The word was quiet but clear. Ling Han spun. His eyes burned with anger. "You dare?" Su Yin did not look away. She pointed at the rocky ground on the enemy's right. "Don't send men to die at the gate. That is a trap. See the rocks? Their line is weak there. Send your best fighters there. Fifty of them. Hit their side hard. It will break their charge." She pointed at the archers' hill. "And tell your archers to aim left. The wind is pushing the arrows. They are missing." Ling Han stared at her. Rage filled his face. Then, something else. Understanding. She was right. He did not thank her. He turned to his captain. "Do as she says! Fifty men to the flank! Now! Archers, aim left for the wind!" The change happened fast. Fifty warriors, swift as shadows, attacked the enemy's right side. The rocky ground broke the enemy's formation. The attack crumbled. From the wall, the arrows found their marks. Enemy warriors fell. The Blackclaw Alpha roared. He saw his plan falling apart. He looked up at the wall. He saw Ling Han. And he saw the small woman in grey beside him. He pointed his axe at Su Yin. His voice shook with fury. "KILL THE WITCH-QUEEN! BRING ME HER HEAD!" A group of huge warriors broke away. They ran for the wall. They wanted only her. Ling Han moved instantly. A savage sound tore from his throat. "Protect the Queen! Kill those men!" He grabbed Su Yin's arm. He pulled her behind him. His grip hurt. "See?" he snarled. "Your clever mind makes you a target." But his eyes were not just angry. They were afraid. For her. The battle turned. The enemy retreated. Their rage was now focused on one name: the Witch-Queen. Silence came slowly to the wall. Only the wind and the groans of hurt men remained. Ling Han turned to Su Yin. His face was dirty with sweat and ash. He looked at her differently. Not like a prisoner. Not like a stranger. He looked at her like a warrior who had fought beside him. He gave one sharp nod. Respect. Then he raised his voice. Every man on the wall listened. "Listen!" Ling Han shouted. "This woman is Su Yin of the Grey Mountain. She is not a captive. She is not a prize. Today, she saved your lives. She saved this fortress." He paused. His voice grew stronger. "From now on, she is your Queen. Her word is my word. You will protect her as you protect me. Do you understand?" The men were stunned. Then, one by one, they nodded. They bowed their heads. "Yes, my Alpha! Yes, my Queen!" He looked at Su Yin one last time. His message was clear: You are one of us now. And you are in more danger than ever. He walked away to help the wounded. Su Yin stood alone on the wall. The wind blew her hair. She was now a Queen. She had power. She had respect. Inside, her hatred burned hotter than ever. He thought he had tamed her. He thought he had made her his. He was wrong. He had just given her the key to her own revenge. Thank you, husband, she thought, a cold smile touching her lips. You built my cage with gold. Now watch me break it.
