The cold was relentless. It pressed in from every direction, wrapping around Lyra like a vice, squeezing the warmth from her bones. The forest, once her sanctuary, now felt like a trap. She had thought she could outrun her heartbreak, thought she could escape the pain that Ronan had inflicted on her. But the world had conspired against her.
