Seraphina barely made it to her car.
Her fingers trembled as she pulled open the passenger door of Leo's sleek black Maserati. She slipped inside, her breath coming fast and shallow. Leo climbed in beside her, saying nothing. He only looked at her with that same intensity that had nearly unraveled her minutes ago.
The city lights flickered across his sculpted jaw as he started the engine. The soft hum of the engine filled the silence between them, but the tension was very strong
She didn't speak until they were cruising down Fifth Avenue.
"Where are we going?"
He glanced sideways. "Somewhere private."
Her fingers tightened on her clutch.
He noticed. "If you want to change your mind, say so."
"No." Her voice was small, but steady. "I don’t"
He took her to a townhouse tucked between towering brownstones on the Upper East Side. From the outside, it looked like something out of a design magazine, marble columns, wrought iron balconies, tall arched windows.
Inside, it was even more breathtaking.
The foyer opened into a minimalist yet elegant space, warm lighting bouncing off hardwood floors. A modern fireplace crackled in the open-concept living room, and smooth jazz played in the background.
"You live here?" she asked, glancing around.
"No. This is... my escape."
"From what?"
He stared at her a moment too long. "Everything."
Seraphina nodded, unsure how to respond. She followed him up the glass staircase to a room on the second floor. It wasn’t a bedroom, she realized, but a studio of sorts. The walls were covered in shelves of books and vintage records. In the center sat a plush, oversized sofa and a sleek sound system. The windows stretched floor to ceiling, revealing the glittering skyline beyond.
"Sit," he said gently.
She obeyed.
He poured her a glass of sparkling water and handed it to her before sitting down beside hernot close enough to touch, but close enough that she could feel his warmth.
"Before we do anything," he said, leaning back, "I need you to understand something."
She looked up, eyes wide.
"This isn't just physical, Seraphina. What you're asking for, what you're stepping into, it changes things. It is ready to change us."
She swallowed. "I want to change. I want to understand."
His gaze dropped to her mouth. "You don't need to understand everything right away. But you do need to be honest with me. Always."
She nodded. "I will be."
A long beat passed.
"Good," he said finally. "Lesson one, then."
He moved closer, slowly, as if testing the space between them.
"Trust," he whispered.
Her breath caught.
"I want you to close your eyes."
She hesitated.
"Do you trust me?"
She nodded.
"Then close them."
She did.
There was a pause, then the rustle of fabric as he moved. She felt the couch shift slightly beneath them. The air around her grew warmer, thicker.
Then she felt it—the lightest brush of his fingertips against her jaw. Feather-soft. Reverent.
His hand slid to her cheek, cupping it as his thumb traced the edge of her mouth. She gasped, lips parting.
"Don’t think," he murmured. "Just feel."
His mouth claimed hers a heartbeat later.
But this kiss was different. It was slower, deeper, more exploratory. He kissed her like he was mapping new territory gently coaxing her to follow, to open, to trust.
And she did.
Her hands slid into his hair. Her lips followed the rhythm of his, mimicking, learning. When he deepened the kiss, she responded in kind, breathless but eager.
His hands never wandered. They stayed at her face, her jaw, her hair. touches that grounded her, soothed her.
By the time he pulled away, she was dazed and warm all over.
Leo watched her carefully, searching her eyes.
"How do you feel?"
"Like I’m floating."
A smile touched his lips. "Then I’m doing something right."
She let out a soft, giddy laugh.
He reached for her hand. "Lesson two will come tomorrow. Tonight, you should go home."
"Already?"
He nodded. "If you stay, I won’t be able to stop."
She looked down, a blush rising to her cheeks.
"And you deserve better than a rushed night of heat."
She met his eyes again, heart thudding. "So this is real?"
"It's the most real thing I’ve felt in a long time."
A quiet beat stretched between them.
"Can I ask something?"
"Anything."
"Why me?"
Leo reached out, gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Because you see the world like it still has magic in it. And maybe, just maybe, you could help me believe in it again."
