Chapter 11

Raven stared at the tablet in stunned silence. The headline glowed against the screen like a taunt. LAURENT DYNAMICS CEO EVA LAURENT MISSING FROM PUBLIC VIEW AFTER IDENTITY ALLEGATIONS. Below it were photographs taken less than an hour ago. One showed her stepping out of the boardroom. Another captured Marcus entering her office. The final image showed the lights inside her office turning off. Someone had been watching Laurent Dynamics all day. Not from a distance. Up close. Close enough to track her movements. Close enough to know exactly where she was. Raven's shock lasted only a moment. Then came the anger. Hot. Sharp. Unrelenting. She lowered the tablet slowly, her jaw tightening. "This ends now." Marcus studied her carefully. He recognized that look. The tears were gone. The fear had vanished. In its place was something far more dangerous. Determination. Whoever was behind this had made a mistake. They had pushed her too far. For five years, Raven had hidden in the shadows. She had rebuilt her life patiently, carefully constructing Eva Laurent piece by piece. She had accepted the fear. Accepted the secrecy. Accepted the loneliness but she refused to accept being hunted. Not anymore. "They're trying to force you into making a mistake," Marcus said quietly. Raven met his gaze. "Then they're going to be disappointed." Her assistant shifted nervously near the door. "Shall I contact security?" Raven nodded. "Increase security around the building and my penthouse." Marcus immediately added, "Double it." The assistant nodded quickly and left. The moment the door closed, Marcus turned back to Raven. "You need to disappear for a few days." "No." His expression hardened. "Raven—" "I'm not running." "You call it running. I call it surviving." She crossed her arms. "If I disappear now, they win." Marcus exhaled slowly. "They're escalating." "And so am I." For a moment, neither of them spoke. Finally, Marcus gave a reluctant nod. "Then let's get you home." The drive to the penthouse was silent. Marcus sat beside her in the back seat, his eyes constantly scanning the streets outside. Every black SUV. Every parked motorcycle. Every pedestrian holding a phone. He trusted no one. Raven stared out the window at the city lights passing by. Five years ago, she had left this city broken. Now she had returned stronger. But somehow, the city still had the power to make her feel like that frightened girl on the yacht.No. She straightened in her seat. Not anymore. She wasn't that girl anymore. She was Eva Laurent. CEO of Laurent Dynamics. A woman who had built an empire with her own hands. Whoever was trying to expose her wanted fear. They wanted her hiding. They wanted her to run. She would do the opposite. When they reached the penthouse, Marcus checked every room personally before allowing her inside. Only then did he relax slightly. "I'll stay tonight." Raven raised an eyebrow. "You think they're going to break in?" "I think we don't know what they're capable of." She wanted to argue. Instead, she nodded. Because for the first time, she wasn't entirely sure either. That night, sleep never came. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw headlines. Photographs. Board members staring at her. The look on Marcus's face when he suggested leaving the country. Most of all, she remembered the feeling of losing control. By sunrise, she'd made a decision. She wouldn't hide. She wouldn't cancel meetings. She wouldn't stay home. If someone wanted to destroy Eva Laurent, they would have to do it while she was standing. Not hiding. Not running. Standing. The next morning, Raven stepped out of her dressing room looking completely different. Her dark hair was pinned into a sleek style she rarely wore. The designer suit she chose was sharp and commanding. Her makeup concealed every sign of the sleepless night. Even the scar she usually left visible was softened beneath careful layers. Marcus looked up from the kitchen and paused. "You look like you're going to war." Raven picked up her bag. "I am." He studied her for a moment. She looked calm. Collected, untouchable. Exactly the image Eva Laurent had spent years creating but Marcus knew better. Beneath the calm exterior was a woman preparing for battle. "Are you sure about this?" She met his gaze. "If I stay home, every news outlet will say I'm hiding." "If I leave the country, they'll say I'm guilty." She slipped on her sunglasses. "So today, I go to work." Marcus sighed. "I knew you'd say that." A faint smile touched her lips. "You always do." When she arrived at Laurent Dynamics, employees immediately noticed her. Conversations stopped. Heads turned. Phones disappeared into pockets. Everyone expected to see a woman falling apart. Instead, they saw Eva Laurent. Confident. Elegant. Composed. As though nothing had happened. As though the headlines didn't exist. As though her world wasn't threatening to collapse around her. She walked through the lobby without hesitation. Her heels clicked against the marble floor with steady confidence. Every step sent a message. I'm still here. I'm not afraid and I'm not going anywhere. As she stepped into the elevator, her assistant hurried toward her. "Good morning, Ms. Laurent." Raven nodded. "Schedule unchanged?" Her assistant hesitated. "Mostly." Raven's eyes narrowed. "Mostly?" The assistant swallowed. "There's someone waiting in your office." Marcus immediately stepped forward. "Who?" The assistant looked between them nervously. Then answered. "Damien Draven." The elevator doors slid open and for the first time that morning, Raven's carefully constructed calm threatened to crack.
