Lindsay is walking towards Bloor but she doesn’t notice Mr. Baxter on the other side of the street. She sees nothing but the math book in her arms. The red fox on the cover. She is crying. It astonishes her that Mrs. Baxter would be that angry with her. For doing nothing. She’s done much worse. Tonight she was doing nothing wrong. Only talking (and making out) with Derek at the back door.
What, Lindsay thinks, does a fox have to do with math? Lindsay stops walking and stands there and stares at her book.
Lindsay has smoked a joint. She smoked it with Derek at the back door. Maybe that’s why she can’t see any connection between math and foxes. Maybe that’s what she did that was bad. But Mrs. Baxter wouldn’t have known that, would she? Could she smell it on Lindsay?
