Inside the house, in the living room, Paul says to Sophie, “Did you know that Helen got her breasts done? Implants?”
Sophie puts her wine down beside her feet on the coffee table and looks straight at Paul. She opens her mouth to say something but nothing comes out. She can’t think of anything to say. Her mind has seized up. She never thought she would be the kind of woman who had a friend who got breast implants. The whole thing knocks her out.
“Allan says they are hard,” Paul says. “Squishy, but hard, if that makes sense.”
