Chapter 12

990 Words

Allan stands completely still in Paul and Sophie’s lit up backyard. A raccoon is circling his feet, smelling him. He’s completely forgotten about seeing Sophie n***d. “Away,” he growls. He kicks. The raccoon hisses. Allan wonders if rabies shots are part of the regular immunizations. He’s not sure. He wonders if his kid has had a rabies shot? She gets her immunizations all the time, it seems. Seems every time he has something important to do at work he’s taking her to the doctor for a shot. Hours in the waiting room with kids climbing all over him and the chairs. And then holding Katherine down while a doctor shoots her up and makes her cry. Pacing all night, terrified that deadly fever will strike her down. Helen always seems to be teaching when they’ve booked the doctor appointments
