23. Allan has it in his head that this must be the man who killed the man in the house, the man Paul saw bound and stabbed. This man with his dog. But how does he go about proving this without implicating himself? For days now he’s been worried. Ever since he saw the man on the street, ever since he found the man again and followed him to where he lives. He looks at the pile of pebbles on the front porch, a collection, and looks at the basement windows all boarded up. There must be something in that, Allan thinks. But then he notices that this man’s neighbours’ basement windows are all boarded up too. In fact, most of the houses on the street have boarded up basement windows. But the man sneaks around. He is nervous about something. Even when the man is at work in the reference library
