33. Sophie is knocking on Helen’s door. First thing in the morning. Seven o’clock. She didn’t know where else to turn. Helen, she thought. Helen will be the one who will understand this. After all, Helen was there on the last night with Paul, the night before he met Vivian Middleford. That was the night, Sophie thinks. The calm before the storm. The beginning of the end. She doesn’t care. Sophie knocks on Helen’s door over and over. And then she sees the doorbell. She rings it and can hear the baby cry and this makes her think of Rebecca and her full breasts ache like a charley horse in her chest, and they leak onto her sweater.
