When the first plane hits the World Trade Center, Helen and Allan are taking turns holding Katherine as they sit on the couch in their living room with the babysitter’s mother and father and the two police officers who have come back with a math textbook, a fox on the cover, that they found in a dark alley. The radio is on in the kitchen and the sudden energetic shouting of the news reporter hushes the babysitter’s mother, stops her tears if only for a moment. Helen turns on the TV.
