THE TEMPTATIONIt is not only in the new city that temples are raised to Aten. Throughout the land, beside the old gods, Aten takes his stand: his altars open to the light, his cipher, the globe, with long rays reaching out to touch everything into life, with hands to bless the royal family offering eternal life, and through them all their subjects. On the whole requests for new temples for other gods are refused, and maintenance grants to existing temples cut.
