The next day at work, I threw myself into my tasks with renewed determination, eager to prove myself after the events of the previous day. As I worked, the steady hum of the surrounding office filled the air, punctuated by the occasional ringing of phones and the clatter of keyboards. Suddenly, my phone buzzed with an incoming call. I glanced at the caller ID and saw Mr. Frederick's name was displayed on the screen. With a mixture of curiosity and apprehension, I answered the call. "Hello, Mr. Frederick," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "Cecelia, I need you to come to my office immediately," he said briskly, his tone leaving no room for argument. Puzzled by his abrupt request, I quickly gathered my things and made my way to his office. When I arrived, Mr. Frederick was already waiting for me, his expression unreadable. "Cecelia, I have a task for you," he said, his tone serious. "I need you to gather your things. We're going to one of our construction sites." Surprised by his sudden directive, I nodded in acknowledgment, suppressing the urge to ask questions. Instead, I followed him out of the office, my mind racing with curiosity about the task ahead. As we made our way to the construction site, I couldn't help but wonder what Mr. Frederick had in store for me. As we arrived at the construction site, the bustling sounds of machinery filled the air, drowning out any other noise. Mr. Frederick wasted no time in briefing me on the task at hand, his voice cutting through the din with authority. "Cecelia, I need you to inspect this building and prepare a detailed report," he instructed, his tone firm over the cacophony of construction. "It needs to be in line with the specifications you outlined in the document you provided yesterday." I nodded, the urgency in his voice spurring me into action. "Understood, Mr. Frederick," I replied, my voice projecting over the noise of the site. He nodded in acknowledgment before turning to leave, his footsteps echoing against the concrete floor as he walked away. Left to my own devices, I set about my task, navigating my way through the maze of scaffolding and construction materials. The smell of freshly cut wood and concrete mingled in the air, a tangible reminder of the work being done around me. As I surveyed the construction site, I took note of every detail, my pen scratching across the pages of my notebook as I made observations. I consulted with the construction workers, asking questions and gathering information to ensure the accuracy of my report. By the time evening approached, the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the construction site. But I remained focused, determined to complete my task before the day was done. As I wrapped up my inspection and prepared to leave, a nagging thought crept into the back of my mind. Was Mr. Frederick deliberately trying to wear me out with this task? The sheer scale of the project and the tight deadline seemed designed to test my limits, but I refused to let it deter me. Despite the challenges and uncertainties that lay ahead, I couldn't deny the sense of pride that swelled within me. With each observation documented, and every detail meticulously recorded, I had proven myself capable of handling whatever tasks were thrown my way. As I made my way back to the office, the sounds of the construction site faded into the distance behind me. As I returned to the office and reported my findings to Mr. Frederick, I braced myself for his response. However, nothing could have prepared me for his next words. "You've missed a few critical details," he stated bluntly, his British accent lending an air of authority to his words. My frustration bubbled to the surface. "What did I miss?" I asked, my voice tinged with annoyance. But Mr. Frederick merely ignored my question, his attention already focused on something else. Feeling exasperated, I repeated my question, this time more forcefully. "What did I miss?" I demanded, unable to keep the frustration out of my voice. His response was swift and cutting. "What makes you a good businessperson in this real estate field is having a good eye for details," he said, his tone laced with impatience. "Now go back and get me those details. I need them in the report by tomorrow." "This is absurd," I muttered under my breath, the words slipping out before I could stop them. "What was that?" Mr. Frederick asked, turning his attention back to me. "Nothing," I replied hastily, my cheeks flushing with embarrassment. Without another word, I turned on my heel and stormed out of the office, feeling a mixture of frustration and self-doubt gnawing at my insides. Returning to the construction site, I gritted my teeth and set about conducting the inspection once more. With each detail I noted and every observation I made, I couldn't shake the nagging feeling that Mr. Frederick was right. As much as I hated to admit it, I had indeed missed some crucial details. The realization weighed heavily on my shoulders as I completed the inspection. But did he have to be an asshole about it? I received a text from the manager instructing me to go home and have my report ready by tomorrow. Relief washed over me. At least I didn't have to endure another late night at the office. Exhausted, I made my way back home, the weight of the day's events bearing down on me. When I arrived, I found Beth with her boyfriend, who was also a close friend of mine. Seeing their relaxed demeanor only served to highlight my own stress and exhaustion. Without hesitation, I launched into a tirade about my boss and the relentless demands he had placed on me, despite it only being my second day. "He's putting me through hell, and it's only day two," I lamented, frustration evident in my voice. Beth and her boyfriend exchanged worried glances, concern etched on their faces as they listened to my grievances. "That sounds rough," Beth said sympathetically, reaching out to squeeze my hand in comfort. "But you're strong, Ceecee. You'll get through this." Her boyfriend nodded in agreement. "Yeah, don't let him get to you. You're more than capable of handling whatever he throws your way." I managed a weak smile, grateful for their words of encouragement. But deep down, I couldn't shake the feeling of being overwhelmed by the challenges that lay ahead. As I collapsed onto the couch, the events of the day replayed in my mind, leaving me feeling drained and defeated. After a few conversations with Beth and her boyfriend, I finally retired to bed, determined to put the day behind me and focus on the task ahead. Despite my exhaustion, I woke up early the next morning, determined to tackle my report with renewed determination. With bleary eyes and a steaming cup of coffee in hand, I poured over my notes and meticulously crafted my report, ensuring that every detail was accounted for and every observation thoroughly documented. Hours flew by in a blur as I worked tirelessly to meet the deadline. By the time I finished, the sun was just beginning to rise, casting a soft glow over the city. With a sense of accomplishment, I gathered my things and headed to work, the weight of anticipation heavy in my chest. Arriving at the office, I wasted no time in handing in my report to Mr. Frederick, who looked surprised to see me so early. "You're done already?" he exclaimed, clearly taken aback. I nodded, holding out the neatly bound report for his inspection. "Yes, sir. I wanted to ensure it was completed to the best of my abilities." Mr. Frederick took the report and began to skim through it, his expression unreadable. After a moment, he looked up at me, a hint of surprise in his eyes. "This is... nice," he admitted, his tone grudgingly impressed. "You've done a thorough job." Relief flooded through me at his words, a weight lifting off my shoulders. But before I could fully process his praise, he continued. "I've decided that you'll be working with me on this project," he declared, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Consider it your internship project." I blinked in surprise, taken aback by the sudden turn of events. But as the reality of his words sank in, a sense of excitement bubbled up within me. Working with Mr. Frederick is going to be an amazing experience for me, or so I thought.
