The morning sun was bright over the Nnamdi Azikiwe University campus as Chioma walked across the quad, her bag heavy with textbooks for her first lecture of the semester. She’d only been here a week, but already everything felt both new and strangely familiar – the way students rushed between buildings, the sound of laughter drifting from the cafeteria, the weight of knowing this was where she’d worked so hard to get to.
She found a spot under a big tree and sat down, pulling out her schedule to double-check her class time. That’s when she saw him – Ebube, walking toward the engineering block with a group of other students, his bag slung over one shoulder just like it used to be back in SS3.
For a moment, neither of them moved – then he smiled, a proper smile that reached his eyes, and walked over to her.
“Chioma,” he said, sitting down beside her without asking. “I knew I’d seen you around – couldn’t believe it when I saw you were here too. We actually did it – we got into university!”
“Same,” she said, still a little surprised. “I still remember sitting in that exam hall, just hoping everything would work out.”
[FLASHBACK – SS3, SIX MONTHS EARLIER]
The JAMB exam date had been hanging over their heads for months. Chioma sat at her desk one evening, surrounded by past questions and practice papers – she’d been studying for hours, but nothing seemed to stick.
“I can’t do this anymore,” she’d said to Uchechi over the phone. “What if it’s not enough? What if we don’t make it into the schools we want?”
“Everyone’s stressed,” Uchechi had replied, her voice tired. “I keep going over the same topics again and again – sometimes I wonder if I should just pick something easier.”
From across town, Ebube was sitting at his table, staring at his JAMB syllabus. His older sister had called to wish him luck – she’d told him how tough the whole process had been for her, but how worth it it had been in the end.
“Just keep pushing,” she’d said gently. “It’ll all make sense when you get there.”
None of them had talked much about their fears – they’d just kept showing up to the tutorial classes, kept filling out practice papers, kept hoping things would work out. When the results finally came through and we found out we’d all qualified, there was a quiet sense of relief – like a weight had been lifted off all our shoulders.
We’d celebrated quietly – just the three of us plus Kelechi and Chukwuemeka, who’d also made it into their chosen schools. No big party, just knowing we’d done it was enough.
[BACK TO PRESENT DAY]
“So Uchechi made it to UNICAL,” Chioma said, pulling herself back to the present. “She texted me yesterday – says medicine is harder than she imagined, but she loves it. Can’t believe we all actually got into university after everything.”
“Good for her,” Ebube said, nodding. “She always knew what she wanted – even when we were all pretending not to care about anything back in SS3.”
They sat in silence for a moment, watching students pass by. The campus was busy, full of life and possibility – everything we’d been both scared of and hoping for while preparing for those exams.
“Remember how we’d act like none of it mattered?” Chioma said after a while. “Like getting into university was just something that would happen if we waited long enough?”
Ebube laughed again. “We were all so nervous – but we pushed through anyway. And now look at us.”
“Now look at us,” Chioma repeated with a smile.
