Benedict leaned over my shoulder to stare at the screen. He let out a low, sharp whistle. “If this has been going on for a decade, then we are talking about a massive sum of money.”
“It is a million dollar hole in the budget,” I said. “Someone is padding the staff list and pocketing the difference. They have been doing it for years right under everyone's noses.”
Benedict started to pace the small office. His boots clicked against the floor in a fast, nervous rhythm. “This is not an accident. It has to be someone inside the company. Someone in the middle who knows how the checks move. They are hiding it between the layers of the audit so the people at the top never see it.”
