Pamela walked home tiredly after alighting from the train. She saw two sisters fighting ruthlessly over a man, with their disappointed father trying to stop them. Pa. Pascal, a popular man in the community, had five daughters who still lived with him at their advanced age. Now in his mid-60s, Pa. Pascal's wife had abandoned him and their children when they were young, reportedly running off with another man to Atlanta. He had never heard from her since. He had single-handedly raised the daughters, who had all ended up as troubled individuals on the streets of Virginia.
Unable to greet Pa. Pascal due to the chaotic situation, Pamela shook her head and carried on home. Her father had managed to make sandwiches, bringing her some relief from the stress of cooking. "How was work today?" Mr. Donald asked as he prepared tea.
"Hectic as usual," Pamela replied without looking at him. She headed to freshen up before joining her father for dinner. As she lay on her bed, relaxing and reflecting on the day's events, she remembered how one of her admirers, Martins, had brought her a gift of flowers at work.
"Why are you here at this early hour of the day?" she interrogated him, as Martins stood before her, dumbfounded, clutching a bouquet of flowers. The reaction he received was not what he had expected. He had always admired Pamela from afar, ever since their first encounter at the store. However, Pamela had consistently turned down his advances and shown no appreciation for his efforts to win her over. Despite his friends' advice and various tactics he had tried, nothing seemed to work.
And now, here he was, looking into her eyes and pouring his heart out. "Pamela, I love you. I have tried countless ways to prove this to you, but you never seem to appreciate any of my efforts. Why? Why are you doing this to me, my love?" His voice cracked with emotion, and he looked on the verge of tears, feeling frustrated and at a loss.
"Enough," Pamela interrupted him, her tone firm.
"Martins, enough of all this nonesense. Reponsible men don't chasing after a lady by this time of the day? While others are there chasing there careers, goal, ambition, securing their future, you are here almost tearing because of a lady. Are you in your right sense at all." Pamela said angrily. " You are...'
"But I love you" Martins said almost screaming. Pamela look around if anyone was watching and feel a little bit relief because her boss is not on sit yet. She move close to tearing Martins.
"If you know what is good for you just leave this place this very moment, she said like everything inside of her meant it" Martins understand the body expression and walk quietly out.
Pamela watch him while he takes his leave.
"I have to do something about all this embarrassment" Pamela thought within herself. Martins have created alot of scene where by he will be begging Pamela to be is girl by drawing attention in public places. There was a time he went ahead on Pamela birthday to make bills of Pamela image and giving people to wish her on his behalf. All this action irritate Pamela. "How on earth will a man behave like this because of a lady" she said to herself.
Back in her room, she was lost in thought of all Martins action at her office earlier in the day. Her mind swam to the event she witness on her way home. How the daughter of Pa. Pascal beat one another up because of a man. She have heard series of stories concerning them on how they run after wealthy man for money. The youngest of them have once elope with a man to Canada and return six month after the guy got arrested for drug. The standard of living of people at Virginia really baffles her. She wish she could oriente everyone that no matter the situation or circumstances they can still improve their standard of living.
"Yes, hardwork pays" she said to herself.
"There is no amount a man want to offer me that I can't make myself as a lady. I don't have to marry because of money or be in a relationship because of materials things". She said to herself as she walk round her room.
"Are you not coming to join me again" . The voice of her father brings her back to reality. She smile to herself.
"I will join you soon" she enters the bathroom.
