AUDREY
Just when I think there is hope for a friendship between Dillon and me, he goes and rubs his b***r on my leg. Big old rod just right there, couldn’t ignore the bone in the bed! And now he wants to tell me what John’s interest is in me, seems kind of convenient that he has some big revelation just as I have kicked him out of bed.
“Go ahead, out with it.” My voice is sharp and to the point.
“Well…. I don’t know how to begin or, should I say where.” He confesses, making me angry all over again.
“UGH, what a waste of time, you don’t even know, do you?” I accuse. Knowing full well I am wrong and probably being unreasonable.
“ No, I do, it’s just a lot to process and I really don’t know what part I should start with.” He is much softer with his voice than usual and I can fully sense the sincerity of it all. I sit still for a minute, mulling over my options. Finally, I pat the bed.
“Come back up here big boy.” I tease, letting out a little giggle. I hear him huff, I assume he is turn beet red, but he still obliges and joins me on the bed again. I watch as jiggles around on the bed, sitting against the head board, resting a pillow across his lap.
“Oh come on, no need to hide it.” I continue the joke, feeling quiet amused.
“Please drop it Audrey.” He groans out in frustration, moving to get up from the bed again.
“ No, don’t move. I will stop, promise. Sit, sit, sit” I grab onto his shoulder, pulling him back while using my most sickly sweet voice.
I move closer, trying to snuggle up close to him again. I hate to admit it but there is something comforting about being held close. He shuffles away and clears his throat. I sigh, settling back against the head board.
“Begin.” I deepen my voice, trying to lighten the mood. It does not work and I can sense even more the nerves Dillon is feeling.
“ John is your uncle.” He blurts out, almost not spacing the words.
“Well that just isn’t true.” I reason with him, and it’s not; my dad is an only child.
I can feel him tense beside me I can feel the sheets being scrunched up and released by him.
“No it is!” He stresses.
“Ok, I am going pretend this is a real situation right now. Do tell, how is John my Uncle?” I hold my breath, waiting for logic behind this one.
“ He is your grandfathers first born child.” His voice is serious and I don’t know if I doubt the truth behind his words, but I am going to try pick them to pieces anyway.
“ My Grandmother could only have once child and that almost killed her. That’s why there isn’t anymore.” I talk condescendingly slow.
“Luna Margie isn’t his mother, Leona is.” He sounds unimpressed with my tone.
“ Well in all the stories I have heard they have only ever loved each other. Apparently they met and knew it was meant to be.” My reply is curt and to the point. Of course I know my family better than he does. After all it is MY family!
“Ok well since you don’t care about that part, let me tell you the good part.” I can feel his anger rising and his distaste for my insolence. He shifts forward and turns towards me.
“Guess who else is a wolf?” He questions me and I am all ears for it.
“Yea go on, who?” I fake disinterest.
“YOU.” He jabs my shoulder
Stunned, there isn’t another word for it. I sit in silence, trying to soak up the information being hurled around the room.
“Yea didn’t see that coming did you.” He gloats. Waving his arms around celebrating his “victory.”
“Yep, I did not.” I admit defeat. Turning and lying back down. Anxiety taking back over and consuming my body. The feeling creeps up and into my chest, leaving me stuck on the bed and wishing it would suck me in and take me away.
“Oh look Audrey, I didn’t mean to sound rude. I feel like maybe I am not explaining this right.” He pleads with me. Still I lay motionless. I can’t cope with this kind of mental load right now and he still hasn’t told me John’s plan!
“Audrey, I have started now, so I am going to keep going. It is better if you hear it all so you can ask questions.” He isn’t giving me a choice, but I am not going to be receptive to this discussion. I stare blankly at the wall while he continues.
“ Obviously the pack is to go to the first born son, since no one knows John exists, it was naturally your father who was next in line. Being it isn’t his natural born right, he lacked the motivation and desire to want to take over. He is definitely able and he has the blood line, it’s just more effort on his behalf, more hoops to jump through, more specialized training to be done. The succession will naturally fall to John during a ritual, with your father; it would require an official to be present to help the transfer happen.
Anyway off topic, but your father is due to take over the pack, he is back there now, but John is obviously mad that his mother and him were cast out, he wants his position as Alpha and he wants your Grandfather banished, like him and his mother were.” I lay quietly, blinking back tears, not for my predicament this time, but for Leona’s. She showed me such kindness while she was here, why would anyone want to hurt her?
“Why would my grandfather do that to Leona?” I croak.
“ He found his mate.” Dillon replies simply.
“What is a mate?”
“They really never told you anything, did they?” I can hear the surprise in his voice.
“I feel like this is really out of my depth to try to explain.” He sighs and I feel his pain. This shouldn’t be his job at all.
“ Ok, each werewolf is provided with a mate from the Moon Goddess, a mate is the one person you feel whole and complete with, without your mate you are just one half of a whole wandering around aimlessly, just surviving. When you turn 18 your wolf awakens and you are able to find your mate. You will know the instant they are close, you will smell their scent before you can see them and then, when you touch, tingles will ravage your and then that’s it. That is the mate bond.” He finishes in a hurry, his explanation leaving more to be desired. I could tell there was more to be said on the subject, I just had more pressing questions.
“Do I have a wolf?” My first question, maybe my dream earlier held substance.
“I assume so, your family is of Alpha stock, and it would be something unheard of if you weren’t.” He seems so certain when he talks about it; it almost has me believing this is a real conversation.
“And I will have a mate?”
“I would assume so, Audrey.” He seems somewhat irritated at my childish question.
“ Are you my mate?” I question, making him squirm uncomfortably on the bed.
“I don’t think so, I am of age and the mate pull isn’t there.” He stammers his words a bit and I smile confidently.
“ If mates are your one and only, why do I turn you on so much.” I lower my voice and crawl across the bed towards him.
“FOR f***s SAKE AUDREY DROP IT!” He explodes throwing his hands in the air, flying off the bed. His sudden movement startles me and I fall back in a fit of laughter.
“I am a man, it happens.” He throws over his shoulder closing the door behind him.
I try to process the mountain of information just dumped on me. So many questions, of course I would push away the person helping me come to terms with it.
The clock hands keep ticking and Dillon hasn’t returned yet. My brain hasn’t stopped and is creating a list of questions to fire at him when he returns. My curiosity is getting the better of me, where is he! He has been gone a good ten minutes! I need to know more!
I climb off the bed and slip out the door, looking up and down the hallway for any sign of life. Nothing moves, no lights, I wonder where he has gone. It can’t have been that bad, really. I scoff heading towards the bathroom, may as well while I am up.
The door creaks open and I flip the light on, my eyes take a minute to adjust to the brightness. Found him! My cheeks burn up as I realize the situation in front of me. Dillon is standing, back against the wall, pants around his ankles, flogging it like it’s his last chance. I quickly close my eyes and turn my back, the heat is rising all through my body.
I begin to walk out the door when I hear gentle moans escape him. My body freezes and I feel myself begin to shudder.
“OH MY GODESS, AUDREY!” He gasps.
“ I.. I am… sorr…sorry. I didn’t see anything.” I stutter.
“ f**k it Audrey, why are you here?” He let out an exasperated sigh.
“Yea look I just need to wee.” I quickly reply. I keep my head down and head back into the bathroom.
“You can leave.” I quickly shoo him towards the door. The door closes gently behind him, and I quickly flick the lock. Something the snake wrangler should have thought to do! I snicker at my quick wit.
I finish my business, then sulk back to the bedroom, this night just got a whole lot more awkward and leaves a whole lot of questions to be answered.
