“Don’t stop now, do you want to be swallowed by the portal” Aviv’s voice came again, firm but steady behind her. With a deep breath, she stepped forward, the cool energy of the portal enveloping her like a sudden gust of wind.
They emerged on the other side into a small clearing covered in mist. The air was filled with magic, making her skin tingle. Standing before them were two figures fully covered in dark emerald-green robes, their faces invincible. They were the guardians of the portal, belonging to neither Umbra’zar nor Eryndor.
One of them stepped forward, his voice echoing with an unnatural resonance. “Who dares to cross the border?”
Aviv stepped into the light, his presence commanding despite the dirt-streaked clothes that had replaced his princely attire. He lowered the hood of his cloak, revealing his face. Both guardians gasped, their heads bowing immediately in recognition.
“Prince Aviv,” the first guardian said, awe lacing his voice. “We did not know you would be returning, and we expected you to just go through the palace .”
Aviv raised a hand to silence them. “You know nothing of my presence here. Do you understand?” His tone was cold and sharp, leaving no room for argument.
The second guardian hesitated. “But, Your Highness—”
“No one must know I am back, And also you do not see my company, neither should you register their faces in your mind” Aviv interrupted, his eyes flashing. “Swear it on the Old Magic.”
The guardians looked at each other before nodding slowly. “We swear it.”
Aviv led Cara, Mary, and Kelly past them and into the heart of the Mystic Forest.
The forest seemed alive, and not in a comforting. Cara shivered as the path before them narrowed, the trees leaning inward as though watching them. Occasionally, faint whispers humed in her ears, too soft to make out but enough to unsettle her.
“It feels like it’s… alive, watching us,” she said, holding the strap of her bag tightly.
“I mean it probably is,” Kelly said, in a grim voice. “The magic here is untamed, it has never been controlled. It’s been this way since the Separation. Stay close and don’t get lost.”
As they walked deeper into the forest, the peace broke with a sudden, roar. From the shadows came a creature with unnatural form. It was the combination of features; the body of a wolf, the claws of an eagle, and eyes that glowed an eerie yellow.
“Get back!” Aviv shouted, immediately drawing his sword. He moved with practiced precision, putting himself between the monster and Cara. Kelly and Mary immediately began casting protective spells, their voices steady despite the chaos.
The creature lunged, its razor-sharp talons slashing through the air. Aviv defended against the attack, his blade sparking against the beast’s claws. Mary’s spell came to life, a barrier forming just in time to deflect a second strike. But it was clear that their opponent was relentless, and the forest’s wild magic made even simple spells unpredictable.
Cara stood frozen, her heart pounding as the scene unfolded. She felt useless, a burden in the midst of warriors and witches. But then she heard Kelly’s voice, strained and urgent. “Cara! Do something!”
“I don’t know how!” Cara cried, panic rising in her chest.
“You do,” Mary shouted, her hands glowing with the light of a barely contained spell. “Focus! Feel the magic around you and let it guide you!”
Cara closed her eyes, the sounds of the battle fading into the background. She forced herself to breathe deeply and evenly, to push past the fear and doubt. The forest’s magic was everywhere, a wild, untamed current that she could feel tugging at her. Unconciously, she reached for it, letting it flow through her instead of trying to control it.
The words came, whispered from somewhere deep within her. “Ignis lux veritas,” she murmured, her voice trembling but growing stronger with each syllable. Heat surged through her palms, and when she opened her eyes, a burst of light erupted from her hands, hitting the creature directly in the chest.
The monster let out a pained howl, Disintegrating into dark particles before vanishing completely. The forest fell silent, as though holding its breath.
Cara stood there, her hands still glowing faintly, her chest heaving. She looked at Mary, Kelly, and Aviv, their expressions a mix of shock and surprise.
“I did it,” she whispered, more to herself than anyone else.
The forest energy of the forest started to change around them, it moved from being oppressive to becoming calm, easing the tension around them. It was as if the forest recognized her as something… someone… significant.
Far away, in the dark halls of Umbra’zar, King Alexander opened his eyes. The darkness of his chamber receded slightly as his golden irises glowed faintly in the gloom. He had been in a deep, a restless slumber, his body considerably weakened by the draining of the Tree of Light and the centuries-long search for his mate. But right now, something had stirred him from his lethargy.
He sat up slowly, his movements planned but heavy with exhaustion. The faint echo of magic still hummed in his veins, resonating with the pulse he had felt moments ago. It was faint but could not be mistaken.
“She’s awake,” he murmured, his voice deep and hoarse from disuse. King Alexander has not spoken in over ten years. He rose to his feet, his tall figure casting lengthy shadows across the room.
The advisors and guards out of his chamber stirred uneasily, sensing the shift of their king’s demeanor. Alexander had spent the last decade in melancholy, his power slowly wanning because the Tree of Light had withered. But now, the magic he felt had reignited a spark within him.
He walked to the balcony overlooking the dark expanse of Umbra’zar, his gaze fixed on the horizon. “The air has changed,” he said softly, a small but dangerous smile forming on his lips.
Somewhere out there, she existed. The one who could bring balance—or chaos. The one who could either save or destroy everything.
And he would find her.
The forest, once wild and unyielding, now felt watchful but not hostile. Cara had proven herself, if only for a moment. But in doing so, she had unknowingly awakened forces far beyond the Mystic Forest—forces that had been waiting for her for centuries. Forces that would stop at nothing to have her.
The journey had only just begun, and the stakes had never been higher.
