The right thing to do was retreat into my room but I couldn’t. I felt my chest tightening with what seemed like dread. Why was he avoiding me? Did I… did I do something? Were we back to square one? I debated about it for a few seconds and decided I wasn’t going to just be quiet. I took small hesitant steps toward Gideon’s room. And when I knocked once, it took several seconds for the door to open. Gideon stared down at me with a bit of surprise like he wasn’t expecting to see me there.
