CHAPTER THIRTEEN Miranda’s notion of a brief hiatus that Sunday evening was short lived. It started with a call from Skip’s cellphone around eight, which gradually became incoherent. Something about taking crazy Annie to a Waffle House because it was the least he could do and dropping her off at a witches meeting to report back about a ceremonial location. All this mixed up with an encounter with a “hell-bent, laidback Southerner” while Skip hid in the bushes. Now it seems Skip was rattled over the return of this same guy in “that old Chevy pickup.” Trying to simmer it down a notch only seemed to make things worse as Skip threw in so many contingencies, Miranda could hardly get a word in edgewise. Soon there was no solution except to drive back there and see if she could settle him down.
