I BLINKED. Still, blackness greeted me. As though I’d been dropped into a well of infinite nothingness. More blinks. Same result. The blackness shifted. Just a little. Shadows? I tracked the slow dance of the one I’d seen move. Twirling. Swirling. Macabre fingers reaching out, beckoning, pointing, all of them gnarled and deformed. Not shadows, I realised the more I studied the subtle alterations. Fog. Thick, black fog. Everywhere. Disorientation in its most terrifying form. I took a deep, shuddering breath. My entire self stiffened upon realising nothing entered my body. You have no body, I reminded myself. No body. No breaths.
