25 A loud snore penetrated my thoughts with startling proportions. My eyes opened to slits in search of the source. As my breaths rippled across my lips like deep growls, I realised it had been me. Even the jumpstart from deep slumber couldn’t prepare my eyes to fully open. I closed them again. The light pierced like pins, anyway. Or, that could have been the drumbeat happening inside my head.
