THE MAN ABDOULLAH Abdoullah was born to a poor long-bearded Afghan carpenter father and a Russian mother, who was a teacher in a girl’s school in Kabul. This school had been burned down before. It then got rebuilt from the pile of rubble it was, only after Kabul slipped from the grip of the Taliban that had token over Afghanistan. The family only managed to get away. It was quite a task on the part of Abdoullah’s parents to get him to attend school. They had to sell all of their livestock, and borrowed a heavy sum to make up his fees. They did not mind facing a barrage of embarrassment and disgrace from their creditors, who never failed to come whenever the payments due unto them were defaulted.
