Chapter 3 Turning thirty counts as a major life event, as does any birthday ending in zero. To celebrate, I’d given Melanie diamond earrings and taken her to eat at the premier restaurant in town. The Roasted Pig was much better than its name implies. I’d made the reservation almost a year in advance and still had been placed on the wait-list. When my name reached the top only a week before Melanie’s birthday, she was ecstatic.
