Chapter Four: The First Crack

869 Words
Rain drummed softly against the windows of Olivia's apartment. Emma had not slept. She sat on the couch, wrapped in a gray blanket, the photograph and anonymous letter spread across the coffee table. Every few minutes she picked up the picture of Alex, the mysterious woman, and the little girl. Every time she looked at it, she noticed something new. The way Alex held the child. The tenderness in his smile. The ease with which they stood together. It didn't look like strangers posing for a photograph. It looked like a family. Emma's chest tightened. "No..." she whispered. "There has to be another explanation." Olivia walked into the living room carrying two mugs of coffee. "You've been staring at that picture for two hours." Emma didn't answer. She pointed to the little girl. "Look at her." Olivia leaned closer. "What about her?" "She's looking at him the way children look at someone they trust." Silence settled over the room. Emma finally looked up. "If Alex has a daughter..." She couldn't finish the sentence. Her voice broke beneath the weight of the possibility. Olivia reached across the table and gently squeezed her hand. "We don't know that." Emma nodded slowly. "But we don't know that he doesn't." Across London... Alex stood alone in his office on the top floor of Bennett Capital. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city skyline, but he barely noticed the view. His phone remained in his hand. Twenty-three unanswered calls. Seventeen unread messages. None from Emma. He closed his eyes. For fifteen years, Emma had answered every call. Today... Silence. A soft knock interrupted his thoughts. "Come in." His assistant entered cautiously. "Mr. Bennett, Mr. Langford is here." Alex's expression hardened. "I told you never to let him come here." "He said it wasn't a request." Before the assistant could respond, Victor Langford walked into the office. Impeccably dressed. Perfectly calm. "You should give your staff a raise," Victor said casually. "They're remarkably loyal." Alex waited until the assistant left before speaking. "What do you want?" Victor smiled. "I came to see how your engagement is progressing." "You already know." "I know Emma received the photograph." Alex's jaw clenched. "You sent it." Victor walked toward the window. "I merely accelerated the inevitable." "You promised you'd stay away from her." Victor slowly turned. "I've made many promises in my life." His smile faded. "I don't keep all of them." Emma finally returned to the apartment she had shared with Alex for nearly four years. She had told Olivia she only needed a few things. The moment she stepped inside, memories flooded every corner. Their framed vacation photographs. The blanket they argued over every winter. Alex's favorite coffee mug still resting beside the sink. Everything looked exactly the same. Everything felt different. She walked into the bedroom. On the nightstand sat the engagement ring box Alex had used three months earlier. She picked it up. Inside was a folded note she had never noticed before. In Alex's handwriting were the words: "No matter what happens, I'll always find my way back to you." Emma pressed the note against her chest. Fresh tears escaped. "If you loved me..." she whispered into the empty room, "why are you hiding from me?" She packed a small suitcase. As she turned to leave, something caught her attention. Alex's study door was slightly open. She frowned. He almost always kept it locked. Curiosity pulled her inside. The room smelled of old books and cedarwood. His desk was immaculate. Almost too immaculate. Emma opened the top drawer. Nothing. The second. Business documents. The third. Empty. Then she noticed something strange. One file folder was thicker than the others. She opened it. Inside... Every document had been removed. Only a single sheet of paper remained. Typed neatly across the center were six words. Some truths should stay buried forever. Emma's heartbeat quickened. Who had left that message? Alex? Or someone else? Before she could think further, she heard the front door unlock. Someone was coming inside. Emma quickly switched off the study light. Footsteps echoed through the apartment. Slow. Deliberate. She held her breath. The footsteps stopped just outside the study door. The handle slowly began to turn. Emma's heart pounded so violently she thought it might give her away. The door opened. Alex stood there. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. He looked exhausted. His tie was loose. His eyes were red from lack of sleep. He wasn't the confident businessman the world admired. He was simply a man terrified of losing the woman he loved. "Emma..." he said quietly. She stared at him. "I only have one question." He nodded. "Anything." She swallowed hard. The name from the letter echoed in her mind. "Who is Sophie?" The color drained from Alex's face. His lips parted. But no words came. That silence hurt Emma more than any answer ever could. She picked up her suitcase. Walked past him. And whispered without looking back, "You had fifteen years to tell me." The apartment door closed behind her. Alex remained frozen where he stood. Alone. For the first time in his life... He realized that silence could destroy a love story faster than any lie.
