We pulled up to a truckstop on the outside of town with an attached diner around twelve o’clock. Eighteen-wheelers filled the enormous parking lot and the rumble of dozens of idling diesel engines buzzed the hot late-spring air. I saw my daughters once we entered the restaurant side of the store. They were sitting in a booth against a wall, far removed from the windows, with two men sitting with them. Even dressed in plain clothes they looked like cops. They nodded as Frank waved at them and left the table to go and sit at another, one with a view of all the windows and doorways.
