Claimed

I ripped my wrist free and ran. Kael’s growl followed me through the crowd, but the press of bodies and the dark worked in my favor. I shoved past dancers, ignored the bartender shouting something about an open tab, and hit the side exit hard enough to slam the door against the brick wall outside. Cold night air slapped my face. My wolf was already there, waiting in the alley like he’d known. Golden eyes locked on me. I didn’t slow down. “Move,” I gasped. “We’re leaving. Now.” He fell into step beside me, massive body brushing my hip as I half-jogged the three blocks home. Every shadow felt like it had panther eyes. The apartment door locked behind us with a sound that was nowhere near loud enough. I braced both hands on the kitchen counter and tried to breathe. The system interface bloomed in angry red. *Task 003-B – Incomplete. -30 points. Current total: 85 points. Rank decreased: Initiate → Probationary. Warning: Further rank loss will trigger temporary companion restriction. Companion designation: Thorne. Restriction duration if triggered: 72 hours.* My knees buckled. I slid down the cabinets until I was sitting on the cold tile, arms wrapped around my middle. “Thorne,” I whispered. The name the system had just given him sat strange on my tongue. “They’re going to take you away from me if I f**k up again.” Thorne pressed his entire body against my side, heavy and warm, like he could physically hold the rank in place by force of will. I buried my face in the thick black fur at his neck and shook. “I almost had him. I did everything right. Flirted, touched, left him hard and he still smelled something… the bond. You. Whatever the scent mask didn’t cover. He knew I was claimed and now the system is punishing me for it.” A soft knock on the door made me flinch so hard my teeth clicked. “Ves? It’s me.” Seryna’s voice, low and careful. “I was still up. Saw your location ping when you left the club in a hurry. Open the door.” I didn’t want her to see me like this. I opened it anyway. She took one look at my face, at the wolf plastered to my side, at the way I was still shaking, and stepped inside without another word. “Bathroom,” she said quietly. “Come on.” I let her guide me. She sat me on the closed toilet lid, ran a washcloth under warm water, and wiped the smeared makeup from under my eyes like it was the most normal thing in the world. The wolf filled the doorway, watching. “I don’t need…” “I know.” She wrung out the cloth again. “You don’t have to tell me what happened. You don’t have to tell me anything. I’m just not leaving you alone on the floor.” I laughed once, broken. “You’re too good at this, showing up, not asking. It makes it harder to keep the walls up.” “Then stop trying so hard.” She handed me a glass of water. “Drink. Then we’re going to the couch. You can shake there with better back support.” I did what she said. We ended up on the couch with a blanket. The wolf climbed up and draped himself across both our legs, Seryna scratched behind his ears and didn’t comment on the way my fingers stayed buried in his fur. “I dropped rank,” I said eventually, staring at the dark television. “First time. If it happens again they restrict him. Seal him. Seventy-two hours. I don’t even know what that looks like and I’m already sick over it.” She was quiet for a long moment. “Then we don’t let it happen again.” “There’s a bigger task tomorrow. Twelve hours left on the timer when the sun comes up. A mated dragon. I have a heat potion and a scent mask and no actual plan beyond ‘don’t die and don’t lose him.’” Seryna’s hand stilled on the wolf’s head. “You’re still going.” “I have to. The alternative is worse.” She didn’t argue. She just shifted so her shoulder pressed against mine and stayed like that until my shaking finally slowed. At some point I fell asleep sitting up. When I woke up before dawn she was still there, head tipped back against the couch, breathing even. The wolf hadn’t moved. The system interface flickered the second my eyes opened. *Dragon task timer: 12:00:00 Preparation window closing. Heat-Inducing Potion and Scent Mask recommended for deployment.* I extracted myself carefully. Seryna stirred but didn’t fully wake. I crouched in front of the wolf and rested my forehead against his. “I have to go,” I whispered. “If I stay and the timer runs out, the failure hits harder. I can’t risk the restriction. Not on you.” He made a low sound in his chest, “I know. I’ll come back. I swear.” I kissed the space between his eyes. “Guard the apartment. Guard her if she stays. I’ll handle the dragon.” I changed into the sturdiest clothes I owned, tucked both vials into my jacket, and left before Seryna could open her eyes and make it harder. The mountain was a two-hour ride on the transit line that ran to the edge of the city. The air changed the higher I climbed, the scent mask sat cool on my skin. The heat potion stayed sealed in my pocket. I talked to the empty trail the way I usually talked to the wolf. “This is insane. I’m walking into a mated dragon’s territory with a potion that forces heat and a mask that probably won’t hide everything. Kael already smelled the bond. What’s a dragon going to smell?” No answer but the wind. The trail ended at a wide ledge of black rock. A cave mouth opened in the cliff face, deep and dark enough that the morning light died a few feet inside. I stopped at the threshold, heart slamming. A deep voice rolled out of the dark, so low it vibrated in my ribs. “I already have a mate. Leave… or be used.”
