Forty-Eight Hours

The red warning was still burned into the edge of my vision when I opened my eyes. *Next task involves a mated dragon. Preparation window: 48 hours. Failure will result in rank drop and companion restriction.* I sat up slowly. Every muscle in my body still remembered two c***s and the way I’d staggered home. The wolf was already awake, head resting on the mattress beside my hip, golden eyes steady on my face. “Morning,” I rasped. “You saw it too, didn’t you?” He didn’t move, but the weight of his stare felt heavier than usual. I dragged a hand through my hair. “A mated dragon, heat potion, scent mask and forty-eight hours to figure out how not to get eaten or claimed or both. And if I f**k it up, they restrict you. That’s the part that actually scares me...” A soft knock on the apartment door cut me off. I froze. The wolf rose in one silent motion and positioned himself between me and the entrance. I pulled on yesterday’s hoodie and cracked the door. Seryna stood there with two coffees and a paper bag that smelled like warm pastries. Her curly hair was still messy from sleep, green sweater slipped off one shoulder. “I know I wasn’t invited,” she said. “But you looked like hell last night when you texted you were home, and I had extra. So… here.” I should have closed the door. Instead I stepped aside. “You’re going to make a habit of this.” “Probably.” She walked in like she’d done it a dozen times, set the coffees on the counter, and scratched the wolf behind the ears without asking permission. He allowed it. That surprised me more than her showing up. We sat on the couch. She didn’t push. She just sipped her coffee and waited. I broke first. “There’s another task. Bigger than the last ones. I have two days to get ready.” “You going to tell me what it is?” “Not yet.” I stared into my cup. “I don’t even know if I can do it. The system keeps raising the stakes and I’m still the same person who couldn’t keep a fiancé from f*****g her best friend on a shared couch.” Seryna’s voice stayed quiet. “You’re not the same person. You just haven’t caught up to that yet.” I didn’t answer. She didn’t make me. We finished the pastries in near silence while the wolf pressed against my leg the entire time. After she left I opened the gift shop. Heat-Inducing Potion – 80 points Temporary. Triggers controlled heat response in target. Duration: 6 hours. Temporary Scent Mask – 45 points Masks recent s****l and companion scents for 12 hours. Does not erase bond markers entirely. I bought both. The total stung, but the red warning stung worse. I set the vials on the nightstand and sat on the floor with my back against the bed. The wolf immediately laid his head across my thighs. “You’re worried,” I told him. “I can feel it. You’re heavier. Like you’re trying to pin me here so I don’t go.” He exhaled hard through his nose. “I have to. If I fail, they restrict you. I don’t even know what that means and I already hate it.” I scratched behind his ears the way Seryna had. “Forty-eight hours. Then a mated dragon. And somehow I have to walk in there smelling like nothing and leave in one piece.” Night came too fast. The system interface bloomed just after ten. *Secondary side task available. Task 003-B – Frustration Protocol Locate a panther shifter in the listed venue. Flirt. Touch. Arouse. Leave him hard and denied. Do not climax yourself. Reward: 40 points. Failure: minor bond stagnation.* A map pin glowed over a club three blocks away called The Hollow. I looked at the wolf. “You’re staying here. I can’t walk into a crowded club with a giant black wolf and expect anyone to believe I’m just out for a good time.” He growled low. “I know. I’ll be careful. Scent mask is already on. Heat potion stays here until the dragon. This is just… practice. A warm-up.” The club was loud and dark and packed with bodies that moved like they had extra joints. Music throbbed through the floor. I ordered something clear and strong, leaned against the bar, and scanned until I found him. Panther. Lean muscle under a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up. Dark hair, sharp jaw, eyes that reflected the neon in thin gold rings even from across the room. He was alone at a high table, watching the crowd the way predators watch herds. I didn’t approach immediately. I let him notice me first, let his gaze catch on the way the dress clung to my hips, the way I sipped my drink and looked away like I hadn’t clocked him. When I finally crossed the floor it was slow and deliberate. “You’re staring,” I said when I reached his table. His mouth curved. “You’re worth staring at. New around here?” “Something like that.” I set my glass down beside his. “You always drink alone or is tonight special?” “Tonight just got more interesting.” His voice was low, rough around the edges. “Name’s Kael. You?” “Ves.” I didn’t offer more. “Buy me the next one and maybe I’ll stay long enough for you to find out if I’m interesting up close.” He did. We talked. Every few minutes I let my fingers brush his wrist when I reached for my drink, let my knee press against his under the table and let my laugh come a little too close to his ear. By the second drink his pupils were blown wide, I leaned in. “You keep looking at my mouth.” “Because I want it on me.” His hand settled on my thigh, high enough to make the point. “Come home with me.” I smiled, slow, and trailed one fingertip down the center of his chest. “Not tonight. But I can give you something to think about until next time.” I slid off the stool, stepped between his knees, and kissed him deep, filthy, all tongue and promise. My hand cupped him through his jeans, felt how hard he already was, and stroked once, firm and deliberate, before I pulled back. He groaned into my mouth. “f**k… don’t stop.” “That’s the point.” I nipped his lower lip and stepped away. “Enjoy the frustration, Kael.” I turned to leave. Made it three steps. His hand closed around my wrist, not hard enough to hurt, but fast and certain. He tugged me back around. His eyes had gone fully gold, the human mask slipping. He inhaled once, sharp, and the playful heat in his expression vanished. “You’re already claimed,” he growled, voice dropped into something that vibrated in my bones. “Who sent you?”
