CHAPTER FIVE As expected, Mia didn’t sleep. Not for one second. So there was no time to forget where she was. She was aware of every painful moment of her night in that bleak jail cell. She heard water drip hollowly from the faucet in the rusty corner sink about twelve-thousand times. She smelled the foul odor of a guard’s burned microwave popcorn. She heard the guards’ dress shoes squeaking as they walked up and down the corridor. She heard the snores of a fellow inmate, even if she couldn’t see him beyond the cinderblock walls that threatened to close in on her.
