As Mia stood in front of Eddie’s Gas Station, scarfing down her sandwich—not that she was hungry, but because she didn’t want to carry it anymore and wasn’t sure when she’d next get to eat—she realized that getting home was not going to be as easy as she’d thought. She pounded on the door for the tenth time, then looked forlornly at the CLOSED sign in the window and spun to take in the rest of her surroundings.
